Ayurveda helps boosting the immunity against COVID-19- Experts say

The ancient ayurvedic medicines are still known to be effective to boost the immunity to combat with various diseases. Ayurvedic medicines are fully plant-based medicines.

Health experts say that by boosting the immune systems using Ayurvedic medicines could minimize the bad/ severe effects, hence accelerate the recovery from COVID-19. There is no cure for COVID-19 yet, human trials on the vaccines are still going on and it’ll take sometime for vaccines to arrive.

Basel, Cinnamon, black pepper, dry ginger, raisins and regular yoga (pranayama kriya) aids to increase the body’s immunity to combat viruses. The Indian Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi has also highlighted the benefits of Ayurveda and urged people of India to have a look on the protocols of Ayush Ministry of India to stay fit and healthy.

An immunity enhancer herbal drug Fifatrol, a multidrug combination of ayurvedic classical medicines and herbs like mritunjay rasa, sanjeevani vati, tulsi and giloe. These herbs help increase the production of interferons (proteins) and antibodies to generate immune response against viruses and also increase the rate of phagocytosis, said former CSIR scientist AKS Rawat.

“The idea is if you don’t have a potent weapon combat the enemy, a strong and effective shield is the best bet to protect yourself.”

Ministry of Ayush recommends the following self-care guidelines for boosting immunity health measures and preventive measures with special reference to the respiratory health. These are supported by scientific publications and Ayurvedic literature.

Recommended Measures:

1.     General Measures:

-         Drink warm water throughout the day.

-         Daily practice the Yogasana (Pranayama- breathing exercise) atleast for 30 minutes.

-         Spices like Tumeric, Cumin, Coriander and Garlic are recommended in cooking.

2.     Ayurvedic Immunity promoting Measures:

-         Take chyavanprash (10 gms/ 1 tea spoon) in the morning. Diabetics should take sugar- free chyavanprash.

-         Drink herbal tea/ or decoction (known as Kaddha) made from Basil, Cinnamon, Black pepper, Dry Ginger and Raisin (Munakka)- once or twice a day. Add natural sugar/ or fresh lemon juice to one’s taste.

-         Golden Milk- Half tea spoon turmeric in 150 ml of hot Milk- once or twice a day.

3.       During dry cough / sore throat:

-         Steam inhalation with fresh Pudina (Mint) leaves or Ajwain (Caraway seeds) can be practiced once in a day.

-         Clove powder with natural sugar/ or honey can be taken 2-3 times a day in case of cough and throat irritation.

These measures generally treat the normal dry cough and sore throat. HOWEVER, ONE MUST CONSULT THE DOCTOR IF ANY SYMPTOMS APPEAR RELATED TO COVID-19.

We all know that the prevention is better than cure, so it is a good idea to take all immunity boosting measures ( as guided by Ayush: https://www.ayush.gov.in/) and all preventive measures ( regular hand wash with soap and sanitizers, maintaining the social distance, disinfect the goods brought from outside into the house, and other hygienic practices etc. : https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-novel-coronavirus-health-advice-general-public ) could help flatten the Curve to eliminate the pandemic COVID-19.

Although this article may be good for promoting the "feel-good factor", it is based on very slippery grounds and therefore should not be considered as a piece of scientific, fact-based advice. I think it is fairly safe to say that Ayurveda did not have knowledge of microbial organisms; leave alone viruses which are submicroscopic?infectious agents?that?replicate?only inside the living?cells?of an?organism. Ayurveda also did not understand and identify immunity in the same way as is elucidated in modern-day science. It is therefore not only absurd but also unethical to propagate claims that Ayurvedic medicines can boost immunity against COVID-19 without having supportive data that could withstand the scrutiny of the modern-day requirements of science. The mention of Fifatrol in your article and a statement that the ingredients in this formulation can “help increase the production of interferons (proteins) and antibodies to generate immune response against viruses and also increase the rate of phagocytosis” is undoubtedly objectionable unless there is evidence to support the claim. The above promotional statement in the article also directly contradicts the company’s disclaimer which says “Furthermore, our company or any of its official accepts NO liability whatsoever for the safety, reliability, durability and performance-related above claims for any of the advertisement or information made by else sources in social media or press.” Please follow the link below to verify this statement: https://www.aimilpharmaceuticals.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Disclaimer.pdf When you are endorsing something on the platform like LinkedIn, the expectation is that manufacturer should at least vouch for the safety and reliability product, if asking a shred of evidence for efficacy is too much. COVID-19 is a serious illness. ?It is mysterious why the so-called “EXPERTS” weigh-in and mislead people on such a serious issue??

Undoubtedly, herbs help immunity. However, how relevant it is to say taking turmeric or garlics will do wonders for COVID-19? Immunity does not get robust within a week or even months. Are the things you have mentioned have strong scientific evidence? I do not think so.
