A?Year in Review

A?Year in Review

As the new year approaches I reflect back on this current year.? My book was self published in February.? I was encouraged and even hounded by some of my colleagues to do something, you know things and can contribute to improving our profession – Cop work.? So I began to put my thoughts, experiences, education and drive to work; writing.? Thus, following much work, out came my book. ?

Although I took some marketing courses at the University of Maryland as part of my course work in my BS in Business Administration, that was many decades ago. Many things have changed. Social media was where it was at, which of course I had no clue about that.? So, I sought help and was directed to explore this site. ?

I began to solicit connections and started to create some graphics and videos that were posted.? Initially, the results were less than stellar. But, then things began to improve.? Then they began to improve dramatically.? As of today I have 2,536 followers.? My posts are getting thousands of impressions (I still am unsure what that means), that keep me creating more content.?

I was sitting on the fence at one point trying to decide whether to continue on with my very time consuming mission.? The number of followers and impressions pointed me in the direction of continuing but great motivation was the comments and correspondence I received.

Rick Butso – You have made an everlasting positive impact on the professionalism of law enforcement. Well done!

Estelle M. - Outstanding! “Experiential learning”? Your career is what you are paid for ...your calling is what you are made for.?

Ron Ward – You have had a tremendous impact on law enforcement, and will continue to do so. This is a very powerful story.? Policing at its best.?

L R Perez – Sir, I use your opening statement in the Rampart BOI in my classes.? I teach to LE community and community college about “mediocrity”. Great true statement.?

Bill Walsh – Excellent and thought-provoking observation.? Agreed.?

Jeff Daukas – Unbelievable. And yet, anyone on the job for a length of time can relate to that story.? Thank you, Chief, for reminding us that doing the right thing may not be the easy thing!

David Gardner – Camaraderie can’t be bought, only earned, through experiences like this. This book is a call to action.? As the saying goes, “Words without action are meaningless but actions without words are confusing.” Ross Swope’s contribution to enhancing law enforcement – public relationships is born out of action from decades of experience, scholarly pursuits, and deep reflection.? Simply stated, Ross has talked the talk and walked the walk.

Krzysztof J. Sadowski – I loved this part of the book, it made me laugh, as I imagined the confident officers approach unraveling in my mind.? Stay humble and polite friends, with empathy, dignity, and respect.?

Terry Bullard – Ross – thanks very much for another great piece of knowledge.? Again – could not agree more.? While at my former agency we saw so many Agent – civilian interactions that turned bad. that could have been avoided with some solid emotional intelligence employed on our side.? I’m certainly not discounting the need for a tactical mindset on the job but knowing how to engage with the public in a positive and professional way is a vital skill that can build trust and de-esculate situations before they go off the rails.?

Rich Anderson – This all fabulous!? Great stories and messages! Absolutely love it!?

It is with honor, appreciation, gratitude that I express my most sincere thanks to all of you that are following me, comment on my posts, leave thumbs up, provide impressions and are subscribers to my newsletter. With folks like you in my corner I now have confidence that things can and will improve. I will persevere!

In closing, I wish you the happiest of holidays and a fruitful, successful, and prosperous new year.?

It has been a tremendous year, indeed. Thank you for giving me another rung in the ladder to elevate my leadership. Both your writing and counsel have already paid dividends in helping the men and women I lead. I hope 2024 finds your path continuing to impact lives the way it has mine, Chief!
