Axial drainage to the fore in a fold & thrust belt
#fold and thrust belt #axial drainage # Mizoram fold belt
A few years ago, I was on a flight from Kolkata-Dimapur (in NE India) for an academic interaction at Nagaland University in Kohima. After crossing the Padma Delta in Bangladesh ( a spectacular view in itself) , the flight was soon crossing the Tripura-Mizoram fold and thrust belt.
?I was craning my neck out of the window looking for some deep cut gorges , Braided channels etc . Instead, I was greeted with very narrow with meandering channels in the valleys between two fold packets axially running all along the valley. It held on this orientation , until met a fault diagonally cutting through the fold packets ,diagonally flowing with the fault ?and again running axially in the next parallel valley. ??
Several of these lean and thin meandering channels were a sight in itself and opened my eyes to the kind of drainage they have in this fold belt.

3 个月Meander blocks are controlled by faults. The basal part of sequence shows no incised valleys. The upper part (channelised) stand erect as pillars and at faulted places the thre is slope which is along the fault plane. The thie thickness of the channels is maximum.
