AWS Goodies - June 3, 2024
Monday is here and I have a fresh batch of goodies to share with you!
Cloud Career Journeys - In a new video Prasad Rao and David Linthicum talked about cloud career journeys (including mine). The book is full of very human stories and should be inspiring to you in your own journey. Watch the video:
DoubleCloud Adopts Graviton - In a new case study you can learn how DoubleCloud adopted AWS Graviton in order to deliver a better experience to their customers. They saw a 15%-20% improvement in price performance while running up to 45% of their customer clusters on AWS Graviton-based instances, with no major ARM-related issues during the migration or in production.
Cloudformation + CloudTrail - The CloudFormation console now includes deep links to relevant AWS CloudTrail events, giving you a direct connection between stack operations / events and any errors that were raised during provisioning. Read the What's New to learn more. You simply click Detect Root Cause to highlight the likely root cause of a stack provisioning error.
LL/HT Inference on Amazon EKS- This new AWS solution provides guidance on how to achieve low-latency, high-throughput inference using AWS Graviton or AWS Inferentia on Amazon EKS:
This Guidance demonstrates how to deploy a machine learning inference architecture on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). It addresses the basic implementation requirements as well as ways you can pack thousands of unique PyTorch deep learning (DL) models into a scalable architecture.
GenAI App Building Workflow - My colleague Donnie Prakoso wrote a blog post to share 5 lessons learned in building generative AI applications with a workflow . You can read the entire post to see what he say to say about Step Functions, CDK integration, API destinations, and more.
Bedrock Agents Demo - In a new video , Stephen J. Barr (yes he's my son) and Rahul Subramaniam of CloudFix show you how to use CDK and AWS Lambda Powertools to deploy a Lambda-based Bedrock Agent They also do a deep dive into the new Bedrock Converse API and explain why it simplifies your code when you use multiple GenAI models. After you watch the video, be sure to review the CDK Templates .

Heroku On Amazon Aurora - Heroku recently announced a new set of Postgres Essential Database plans that use Amazon Aurora to deliver exceptional transactional query performance. As they report in their post :
Compared to the previous generation of Mini and Basic database plans, the Essential plans on the new infrastructure provides up to three times the query throughput performance and additional improvements such as removing the historic row count limit.
Storage Optimization at Toyota - A new blog post explains How Toyota Connected North America reduced storage costs by optimizing its growing data on Amazon S3 . The Toyota Connected platform receives binary data from hundreds of sensors in each vehicle, decodes the binary data into a more usable format, transforms and publishes it to downstream consumers, including a big data analytics platform. Moving from static retention policies to a richer set of lifecycle configurations, combined with targeted use of S3 Intelligent Tiering and a reduction in the amount of duplicated data helped them to realize a 40% month-over-month cost savings, even as organic growth grew by 4% each month.
Automated Incident Resolution - AWS Security Hero Sena YAKUT discussed Automating Incident Resolution in AWS . As she says:
In this blog, we’ll explore how to use the AWS Systems Manager Automation runbook to automatically resolve incidents that meet specific criteria.
After explaining why automation is needed. Sena shows how to create a runbook and reminds you to add it to your incident response plan.
Sustainability Scanner - A new post on the AWS Open Source Blog shows you how to Build More Sustainable AWS Workloads with the Sustainability Scanner . Sustainability Scanner is a command line tool that can analyze your CloudFormation templates and give you recommendations on how to improve the sustainability of your cloud infrastructure even before you deploy it. Per the post:
With the rules and CloudFormation template as input, the CloudFormation Sustainability Scanner generates a sustainability report as output in JSON format. In this report, you get a sustainability_score – the higher the score, the more potential sustainability improvements Sustainability Scanner has identified. Higher severity rules have a greater scope for improvement e.g., failing a HIGH SEV rule will increase your score more than a LOW SEV rule.
PowerShell Lambda GUI - This very nice gist of PowerShell code invokes a Lambda function and displays the output in a GUI.
And that's all that I have for today!
Wow, that's a lot of amazing AWS updates! We're especially excited about the low-latency inference on Amazon EKS.
