AWS - cloud computing platform

AWS (Amazon Web Services) is a comprehensive, evolving cloud computing platform provided by Amazon that includes a mixture of infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and packaged software as a service (SaaS) offerings. It is a secure cloud services platform, offering compute power, database storage, content delivery and other functionality to help businesses scale and grow. Deliver static and dynamic files quickly around the world using a Content Delivery Network (CDN).

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), contains the basic building blocks for cloud IT. It typically provides access to networking features, computers (virtual or on dedicated hardware), and data storage space. IaaS gives you the highest level of flexibility and management control over your IT resources.

AWS is providing an on demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies, and governments, on pay-as-you-go basis. These cloud computing web services provide a variety of basic technical infrastructure and distributed computing building blocks and tools.

One of these services is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which allows users to have at their disposal a virtual cluster of computers, available all the time, through the Internet. AWS's version of virtual computers emulates most of the attributes of a real computer, including hardware central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) for processing; local/RAM memory; hard-disk/SSD storage; a choice of operating systems; networking; and pre-loaded application software such as web servers, databases and customer relationship management (CRM).

Amazon markets AWS to subscribers as a way of obtaining large scale computing capacity more quickly and cheaply than building an actual physical server farm. All services are billed based on usage, but each service measures usage in varying ways. As of 2017, AWS owns a dominant 33% of all cloud (IaaS, PaaS) while the next two competitors Microsoft (Azure) and Google have 18%, 9% respectively according to Synergy Group.

Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network which provide a globally-distributed network of proxy servers which cache content, such as web videos or other media, more locally to consumers, thus improving access speed for downloading the content.

Amazon API Gateway is a fully managed service that makes it easy for developers to create, publish, maintain, monitor, and secure APIs at any scale. APIs act as the "front door" for applications to access data, business logic, or functionality from your backend services.

AWS Lambda is a computing service that runs code in response to events and automatically manages the computing resources required by that code.

An Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) bucket is a public cloud storage resource, an object storage offering, which are similar to file folders, store objects, which consist of data and its descriptive metadata.
