Awareness First, Then Deliberate Action
As the final touches are being made for publication soon, here's an excerpt from Chapter 14:
In any journey, without a first step, we go nowhere. The critical first step is deciding to either set out or settle for where we are. In this leadership journey, that means we choose either to pass judgment on our current leadership environment or take the path of least resistance, stay in line, “dance with the one that brung us”, don’t rock the boat, “no ripples in the pond”, etc. The specific next steps we could take are much less important until we learn an awareness that we have areas in which we can improve and bridge from that awareness to a willingness to explore changes that can get us there.
With that awareness pushing us along, the Mission Control leadership team was empowered to pass judgment and apply new ideas, which led us to real management-behavior and -practice changes. The high-trust leadership environment we put in place through this journey brought us the same highly reliable decision-making and strong performance in our management roles that are critical in the Mission Control Room.
Use our experience and our journey to get your team’s attention. Consider this not just a case study of our experience but a benchmarking report from before and after the leadership evolution in Mission Control’s management ranks.
Leverage the ideas that delivered first a sea change and then a tidal wave of deliberate leadership and management practices in Mission Control. Your core purpose, strengths, weaknesses, and risks may not be the same as ours, nor will your specific management-practice changes. But the real destination isn’t those specifics; it is to enable a leadership environment that inherently strengthens your performance in achieving your core purpose.
Discover as a team how to enable this leadership environment in your management roles through deliberate transparency, value alignment, and engagement, just as we did.
