Be Aware of Hurricane Harvey Donation Scams
As we witness the selfless heroism of so many people in our great state, please be aware that these types of natural disasters also bring out some of the most deplorable people.
USA Today just published an article with some tips for donating safely to the organization of your choice. And make no mistake, your donations are sorely needed – and will be for some time. Here’s a few bullet points from the article:
- Scams can come via email. Even if you trust the sender, do NOT give money via a link.
- If you want to make a donation, go directly to the organization’s website.
- Watch out for names that closely resemble reputable organizations. For example, you might see givetoredcross.org rather than redcross.org.
- Make sure the organization actually exists by checking Charity Navigator or GuideStar.

Most of us have been horrified and hopeful as we’ve watched the coverage of Hurricane Harvey. As millions begin the process of starting over, we offer our thoughts and prayers – and have made a donation to the Salvation Army via their official website. The Harris Firm urges everyone who can do so to make a donation to the charity of their choice.
