Award Winning Trophies

How many award winning trophies do you have? We have plenty at our home. In fact, they are great dust-collectors, glistening on top of cabinets that are not always easily accessible
If you are a parent, you have probably gone through the multiple trophies, ribbons and certificates for every sports league and team there is. What do you do with all those mementos? I have kept a couple, but many of those trophies just give me more items to move and clean. Also, can you remember what they’re all for?
Go Cart Trophies?
Each year, we hold a Christmas sing-along in our home and I find a few forgotten treasures to give away. Last year’s was a go-cart trophy from one of our sons. Go-cart? What in the world did he win that for? Did he race around the track quicker than all his friends that day?
Music plaques, certificates of merit, ribbons from the fair...many are placed in a memory box that will someday be surely thrown out by one of our kids or grandchildren. Of course, we have kept a few. In fact, I came across a couple very nice plaques in one of our son’s room. As I read the inscription, I found out he had won First Place Jazz Soloist Award for the Monterey Jazz Festival—two years in a row! So why didn’t he tell us? That’s another good use for those trophies. Sometimes they tell stories!
Golden Keepsakes
Golden keepsakes can reveal a life of activity, of fun, of achievement and inspiration. But it’s important to not base your life on those awards and trophies. They collect dust and become dull with age. There are many has-beens leaning on past achievements. What is most important is what you are doing now.
Yes, we do have a couple older trophies in our garage that my husband won’t part with. They bring back memories of major baseball achievements. At least he whittled the number down from about two dozen to two. What do you do with them all besides throw them away?
Ten Minutes of Fame
I believe in celebrating any award winning achievements heartily. But with most every author, speaker and artist touting the award winning title, put that term in perspective. If accolades are based on a fading memory or dull trophy, it’s time to re-evaluate and focus on the present.
Yes, I’ve received my share of trophies and honors. I, like many others have had my ten minutes of fame. But what I’m excited about is now. Spending my time helping others reach their goals and dreams is a blast. And yes, as my fingers glide over the piano, singing through many old and new-to-be standards, that is a skill I don't plan to ever retire. I will continue to appreciate all the validation, always seeking to dust off and honor the old, but looking forward to the new. I hope you will too!
