Award Shows
There are only four award shows on TV that I’m interested in: the Academy Awards, the Tonys, the Emmys and the Grammys because I’m interested in theater, movies, TV and jazz. All the other award shows may hold mild interest; I might watch parts of them if I’m surfing, but for the most part, fuggediboudit. My favorite award shows point me to new art and artists I’ve missed, never heard of until now, or need to explore. In other words, they’re helpful and they build my inspiration muscles.
Cultured folks have asked if awards are even necessary. How can one thing be singled out as the best of all other things? Well, it can’t. It’s not rational. Some wise man once said that awards exist to spur debate and argument so that we can shout about their unfairness and the undeserving artists who get them. That sounds about right.
