Award for exemplary climate protection: Arce and KfW Bank project awarded!

Berlin, September 8, 2023 – (Climagate/Berlin) The recent recognition received by the Brazilian state of Acre and KfW Bank represents a significant milestone in the global fight against climate change. The REDD Early Movers (REM) Acre Project, funded by KfW, was honored with the "Award for Excellence in Competitiveness 2023" in the "Best Practices" category by the Brazilian Center for Public Leadership (CLP - Centro de Lideran?a Pública).

The state of Acre in Brazil has impressively demonstrated that jurisdictional REDD+ projects can provide effective strategies for conserving tropical forests. These projects reward those who sustainably protect forests, creating not only ecological benefits but also social and economic opportunities for communities.

The REM Acre Project, jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the British Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and implemented by KfW Development Bank in collaboration with the Acre state government, stands out as a prime example of these efforts.

The REM program not only incentivizes the preservation of tropical rainforests but also reinvests the proceeds in improving livelihoods and strengthening the bioeconomy. To date, more than 26,000 people have benefited from this program, including 6,500 families of small-scale producers, over 10,000 indigenous people, and more.

Roseneide Sena, Coordinator of the REM program, emphasizes the importance of community investment: "Of all the funds it receives, the REM program today directly allocates 33% to family production, an additional 12% to indigenous populations, and 17% to sustainable livestock farming. The REM program rewards the state's efforts to prove that through productive integration, there is indeed the possibility of sustaining the forest and providing compensation to the people of Acre for this environmental service."

This award is recognition of the hard work and dedication of the government of Acre and the entire REM Acre team, demonstrating that environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable development can go hand in hand.
