I never thought much about technology. Sure, I knew it was there, shaping the world around us, but its importance never really hit home. That was until one unforgettable night in a small village in Tamil Nadu, where my perspective changed forever.
It was around 11:00 p.m. on a quiet night. I was traveling through the village, the air heavy with the scent of jasmine and the distant sound of crickets. As I walked, I noticed a commotion up ahead. My heart quickened when I saw a man dragging a young girl towards a shadowy alley. Her muffled cries for help sent chills down my spine.
I didn't hesitate. I ran after them, my heart pounding, adrenaline coursing through my veins. I was so close, close enough to see the terror in her eyes and the cold determination in his. But then he noticed me. I reached for my pocket, instinctively searching for my phone to take a photo, to have evidence. But my pocket was empty. I didn't have a mobile phone with me. Helpless, I watched as he disappeared into the darkness with the girl, her pleading voice haunting me.
I returned home, my mind racing, replaying the scene over and over. My wife, bedridden and frail, saw the torment on my face. I told her everything. She listened quietly, her eyes filled with concern and strength. "You did what you could," she said, her voice steady. "But you must be brave and face these situations head-on. Use whatever you have to make a difference."
The next morning, as the sun's first rays filtered through our window, I prepared my coffee, my thoughts heavy. Suddenly, a knock on the door jolted me from my reverie. I glanced at the clock—7:00 a.m. I walked slowly to the door, frustration and exhaustion weighing me down. Peering through the door view mirror, I saw three boys and a girl standing outside, their faces earnest and hopeful.
I opened the door and invited them in. They introduced themselves as students, passionate about making a difference. They revealed that they had made a short film against child harassment, inspired by the very incident I had witnessed. They thanked me for my courage and asked if I had reported the incident to the police. I shook my head, feeling a mix of shame and regret.

They sat down, their excitement palpable as they shared their project with me. "We're using this film to raise awareness and bring attention to the issue," one of the boys explained. "We want people to understand the importance of being vigilant and using technology to help others."
Their words struck a chord with me. I realized the profound impact technology could have, not just in documenting events, but in mobilizing people to take action. It was a powerful tool that I had underestimated.
As they left, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. My wife’s words echoed in my mind, urging me to be courageous. I knew that I could no longer stand on the sidelines, passive and helpless. I needed to embrace the power of technology and use it to make a difference.
From that day on, I made it a point to stay informed and connected. I got a mobile phone, learned how to use it effectively, and joined local community groups focused on safety and support. The students' short film gained traction, sparking conversations and encouraging others to take a stand against child harassment.
Looking back, that night in the village was a turning point. It opened my eyes to the reality of the world around me and the role I could play in shaping it. Technology wasn't just a convenience; it was a lifeline, a means to protect and empower those in need.
In the end, I realized that being brave isn't just about confronting danger—it's about using every tool at our disposal to make a difference. And sometimes, the smallest actions, like a knock on the door, can lead to the most profound changes.
