Avoiding the “Good Enough” Mindset

Avoiding the “Good Enough” Mindset

The world is waiting for you to unleash your full potential. The biggest challenges many of us face are not external but internal—within our hearts and minds. The mindset of settling for "good enough" can be the most significant barrier to achieving greatness. It’s time to break free from this mindset and embrace the importance of thinking bigger, dreaming larger, and striving for more. This is not just about personal success but about creating significant, lasting impact, especially for women entrepreneurs.

The Importance of Thinking Bigger

Thinking bigger enables us to tap into our full potential and achieve extraordinary results. When we limit our goals, we limit our potential. Thinking bigger allows us to push boundaries and explore new possibilities. When we set ambitious goals, we inspire others to do the same. This collective ambition can drive innovation, create new opportunities, and solve significant problems in our communities and the world.

Small and short-term thinking often leads to short-lived results. By focusing on big, ambitious goals, we can create lasting change and build something that stands the test of time.

Shifting the Mindset

To embrace a mindset of thinking bigger, we need to make conscious shifts in how we perceive ourselves and our capabilities.

  1. Recognize and Challenge Limiting Beliefs: We must first identify the limiting beliefs that hold us back. These could be thoughts like "I’m not good enough," "I don’t deserve success," or "It’s too risky." Once we recognize these beliefs, we can challenge and replace them with empowering thoughts. For example, instead of thinking "I’m not good enough," we can affirm "I am capable and deserving of success." As I noted in my book, many women face the mindset that they shouldn’t aim to be wealthy or successful, which can hold us back from achieving our full potential.
  2. Surround Yourself with Ambitious People: Being around people who think big can significantly influence our mindset. Their ambition, drive, and success can inspire us to set higher goals for ourselves. Networking with like-minded individuals, joining mastermind groups, and seeking mentorship from successful people can help us expand our vision and think bigger. During my journey, I found immense inspiration and motivation from other female entrepreneurs who were setting ambitious goals and achieving remarkable success.
  3. Commit to Continuous Learning and Growth: Embrace a growth mindset by committing to continuous learning and improvement. The more we learn, the more we realize our potential. This involves not only gaining new knowledge and skills but also learning from our failures and setbacks. Each experience, whether positive or negative, provides valuable lessons that can help us grow and achieve more. I remember an investor meeting where I was asked about our Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), and I had no idea what it meant. This humbling experience motivated me to learn and grow.
  4. Set Audacious Goals: Don’t be afraid to set big, audacious goals. These goals should stretch you and push you out of your comfort zone. When setting these goals, focus on the long-term impact rather than short-term gains. Ask yourself what legacy you want to leave and how your actions today can contribute to that legacy. Our mission with Under Canvas was to create extraordinary tented experiences that made the outdoors accessible to everyone. This ambitious vision drove us to continually innovate and expand our offerings.
  5. Visualize Success: Visualization is a powerful tool for achieving big goals. By vividly imagining your success, you create a mental blueprint that guides your actions. Visualization can increase motivation, boost confidence, and help you stay focused on your goals. Spend time each day visualizing your success and the impact you want to create.

Embracing Long-Term Thinking

Instead of focusing solely on immediate profits, think about how you can build long-term value. This means investing in your business, your skills, and your team. It involves making decisions that may not pay off immediately but will create significant value in the long run. In our business, understanding the key metrics like EBITDA and how they impact our long-term growth was crucial.

Building something big takes also takes time. Patience and persistence are crucial. There will be setbacks and challenges along the way, but staying committed to your long-term vision will help you navigate these difficulties and keep moving forward. One way I do this is focusing on the impact of my actions, and not just the immediate outcomes. This means looking at how my work is making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the greater good. Measuring impact helps you stay connected to your purpose and motivated to continue striving for big goals.

Remember, strategic planning is essential for long-term success. This involves setting long-term goals, developing a clear action plan, and regularly reviewing and adjusting your plan as needed. Strategic planning helps you stay focused on your long-term vision while being flexible enough to adapt to changing circumstances.
