Avoiding Fitness Failures

Avoiding Fitness Failures

I often meet people who have tried to set a strict fitness routine for themselves, only to be disappointed when they can’t stick to it. Then they feel like they might as well just binge-watch TV and eat chocolate, since they aren’t doing their exercises anyway. It’s happened to the best of us.

The key to maintaining your exercise routine is –surprise!-- actually liking the exercise you do. Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to suggest some unconventional ways to get your steps in and just generally move around more. You might just find a way to be more fit and have fun at the same time!

Let’s start with walking. Maybe you tell yourself you’re going to get up early and do a brisk walk before starting your day. If you’re not a morning person, this is just setting yourself up to feel bad. Lots of people buy into the idea that “real” exercise happens before (or just shortly after) dawn. Folks who rise with the lark might love this idea – but the rest of us don’t have to. If you habitually wake up, look at the clock, and think, “really? I have to go outside? Now?” it might be better to set your sights on a more achievable goal. A walk at the end of the day is just as beneficial, and if you exercise 2 - 3 hours before bed, you can even look forward to better sleep.

It’s not just about timing though. Finding an activity you really like will have you looking forward to your fitness routine instead of dreading it. Stay tuned this week and next for more fun exercise options!
