Avoiding Burnout while WFH!

WFH... Before March 2020, WFH would most likely be a fun acronym for someone who doesn't realise how fast the week goes- "Wednesday-Friday-Huh?".

And gosh, how things have changed! WFH is now *the most* talked about acronym on this entire planet! (Oh well, after COVID-19 anyways!)

Many employees in various organisations are now following the Working-from-home (WFH) protocol, and while it has been received as a refreshing change, care must be taken to avoid burnout while WFH.

A Burnout is primarily experienced due to constantly working in the same environment over & over, and just as one would experience the monotony and over-work associated with a burnout in the office environment, Burnout while working from home can also be experienced which may be difficult to understand and perhaps, even tackle.

Here are some tips I've collected from colleagues, friends and acquaintances which tackle dealing with burnout while WFH. I may add more, but I would also love to hear from you all!

  1. Respect Family time. Remember, you are working from home, and your family deserves an appropriate amount of attention.
  2. Multitask only if needed. Too many instances of multitasking, especially in a new environment can be pretty taxing.
  3. Wear formal / work clothes while working from home and switch to home-wear/casuals after work. This will help you switch on-off between work.
  4. Adhere to time. Not just for appointments and meetings, but also time for your lunch break, tea break and even the breaks to the washroom.
  5. Drink water throughout the day. Very often, we forget to consume our minimum intake for the day just because we’re at home.
  6. Take 2-3 short breaks in between an 8 hour period to do some activity not related to work. It can be as simple as playing a quick game of Snakes & Ladders with your family, or even practicing meditation or even Yoga.
  7. Get enough sleep every night. A good night’s sleep shall enhance productivity, which shall reduce burnout.
  8. Talk with a family member of colleague if you feel something is affecting you. Most of the time, things can be sorted out if you just talk about them.
  9. Exercise at home by doing few simple callisthenics or Yoga. Exercising regularly shall keep you alert and work at good pace.
  10. Keep your spirits high, and spread cheer and positivity. Using appropriate humour has been proven an effective way to deal with stressful moments.

Share this with your friends, colleagues, acquaintances and network, and ensure we make life easier for everyone!

Happy WFH! (And no, dear couples... WFH is still not an acronym for Wife-Fights-Husband!)

Nice article indeed. Need of the hour. One aspect of this is while doing WFH, I think one tries to focus more on proving, to his seniors and even to his colleagues that he is still productive. Believing that others cannot see him while doing things and busy through out the day by giving immediate responses to everybody. And by making him available for everyone. But while doing this he may tend to waste a lot of time and his actual targets for the day may easily be missed. So one has to find good balance between these two extremes. Being new to WFH, most of us, has to learn a lot and adapt accordingly. Thanks for sharing such a nice tips. TIPS ON WIFE FIGHTING HUSBAND AWAITED :)
