Avoiding Burnout
Russell Dalgleish
Scottish Serial Entrepreneur, Connector and Entrepreneur in Residence
I am someone who when I was younger was prone to overworking.
I don't believe I ever experienced burnout, but I would notice that my performance would degrade, and I would become irritable and prone to feelings of negativity when I overworked.
Discovering just how hard you can work and when to rest is an experiment where the results change over time.
The trick of course is to create a quiet time when you can "listen to your body" to find the answer.
"Silence is where balance is to be found."
Once rested of course my situation would improve, the dark clouds would clear and once again I would have clarity of my goal and confidence in how to achieve it.
To avoid this situation today I make sure I schedule plenty of rest and leisure activities which keep me away from my laptop.
Running, cycling, and even simply walking to dog help as do vacations and the simple act of participating in something solely for fun.
This week I've had the pleasure of attending
As I sit here tonight writing these words I can honestly say that I do feel refreshed though I could do without the earworm repeating ABC song lyrics :)

1. London Calling
I was reminded again this week of the pure joy I find in working in London. Yes, I appreciate for many that our capital city can be overwhelming but for me, it is energising. I don't believe there is any city in the world where you can move so quickly from idea to deal.
I've tried to capture some of my thoughts on London here.

2. No Wrong Path
There is a wonderful campaign running at the moment to remind our children that if their exam results have not met their expectations this must be viewed as an opportunity, not a roadblock. Here I share the personal story of my son who simply was not designed to excel in our structured education system.
3. Collaboration - the secret to success
As an entrepreneur, we need to be skilled in identifying and utilising resources which are not under our control. I should know I have no staff but currently run a multitude of projects.
The solution is to build partnerships and here's why.
What's next for me
A week of international meetings for me.
I have just arrived in Lorient in Bretagne, France, to attend the 2024 InterCeltic Business Forum a unique gathering of the nations that comprise the Celtic world. I will be representing the Scottish business community at the conference and look to create new partnerships through the various meetings arranged during the Forum.
Then I head to Paris mid-week and end the week in Copenhagen.
As I've said many times before video meetings are great but nothing builds trust or accelerates opportunities like face-to-face meetings.
If you are around this week it would be great to catch up while I am on my travels.

6 个月I wonder if the whole concept of burnout is more to do with what you are doing than how much. Stick to things you like and the time doesn't really matter. So find your true Ikigai as they say in Japan.

6 个月Been reading a little bit about burnout. When I recall my training years. Working as an accounts apprentice. Studying for exams. Working in a bar at weekends to pay the fees and managing somehow to play rugby. Thankfully they hadn't invented burnout yet ??
