Avoiding all or nothing this New Year...
It's that time of year again when marketing departments at gyms up and down the country are dusting off the New Year offers. Duolingo (other apps are available) is setting up to have you fluent by the end of the year and I am committed to not spending half as much time on Pinterest and Vinted. Yep, it’s New Year resolution time...…or rather not. This last month I have been talking to my coaching clients about how to avoid the ‘all or nothing’ approach to goal setting and how some of the tips below could be useful.
Set Realistic Goals:
Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. This might seem logical but in the middle of March when you’ve seemingly not got anywhere near your goal, it's great to remind yourself of the 2 or 3 steps you have taken.
Create a Flexible Plan:
Allow for adjustments in your plan as circumstances change and focus on progress, not perfection. Remember sometimes the goals we set require the involvement of other people. Have plans flexible enough for you to keep progressing when others are perhaps not.
Develop Consistent Habits:
A goal that requires something of a drastic change is much harder to commit to and also maintain. Instead, look for small habits to develop which can contribute to the overall goal. Consistency over time is often more effective than intense, short-term efforts.
Learn from Setbacks:
This can be a difficult one but view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow and try again.
Create a Support System:
It can be useful to share your goals with people around you who can support you and help you celebrate your success. However, if you are someone who wants to keep to themselves the changes you are making, still remember to celebrate if successful step you take.

Prioritize Self-Compassion:
Most importantly be kind to yourself when facing challenges. Avoid negative self-talk and practice self-compassion to maintain a positive mindset. Sometimes you will feel like giving up and that's ok. It might even be that the goal you set is not really the one you should or could be focussing on. All the time focus on being honest with yourself.
Finally, there is no real reason that January 1st is any better than March 12th or the third Sunday after a New Moon in June. The point is the decision to make a change or to do something different can be made and started at any time. As important as the outcome you are looking for is, so is the process of getting there.

1 年Great insight and great advice for goal-setters. Can I add a twist? Determine which of your goals should not be all or nothing, and which few should be non-negotiable. Goals are written in stone, plans in sand; this gives us the permission to pivot the how, but not necessarily the what, when it should be.
