Online revenues in the US alone reached $602 billion in 2019. With increasing traffic and revenues, it is imperative that every ‘Digital shop’ front is attractive, welcomes visitors and is secure. Nothing could be worse than hitting an easyjet, Oxford University or Travelex stating they are ‘Not Secure’. All of these companies and many thousands, hundreds of thousands have suffered this position and some still do.
The negative effect on a business, every business cannot be understated and given the increasing importance of security, especially during Covid-19 is more important than ever. These figures and the additional increasing traffic coupled with increased targeted cyber-attacks in the form of cyber squatting and Shadow Copy sites, it is critical to get the security fundamentals right.
A homepage is considered as the single most important part of your digital footprint and the entire web site and must be secure, it is the first page that visitors will view. To have a successful website a good homepage is pre-requisite and also becomes a blueprint for every successful business. However, a Not Secure homepage may destroy the chance of achieving your website and overall business objectives and therefore damage your brand let alone making it a target for cyber squatting and a Shadow Copy.
It is estimated that circa 60% of all Internet traffic including websites, are fake. It is critically important that your domain is properly managed to avoid nefarious use, replication and ‘man in the middle attacks’ as happened to BA last year with a resulting fine of £183 million. Certificate authorities, web hosts and internal IT offices often make foolish mistakes and unfortunately, these are rarely found until the situation surfaces as a successful attack, or service outage. Sophisticated attacks can create an identical ‘Shadow Copy’ of a site and effectively take all of the victims traffic, in turn breaching GDPR and other privacy laws.
Ignoring the importance and ongoing management of your domain simply must not be overlooked or left to chance, yet regularly is as the above confirms and by some of the biggest players costing $billions every year.
How can you avoid these costly errors, mistakes and embarrassing situations, what is the solution?
