Avoid This Time-Wasting Mistake: The Coaching Conundrum

Greetings, fellow interviewers!

In this month's newsletter, we want to discuss a common mistake you might be making in interviews that can eat up precious time: coaching. Picture this: a candidate walks you through a previous work experience, and their actions are far from what you would expect from a top performer in your job. The urge to jump in and tell them what they should have done differently can be strong, right?

But here's the thing: with limited time to evaluate candidates, we only have a few hours to determine if they're the right fit for our job and if they'll enjoy it. Interrupting with coaching feedback during the interview can disrupt the flow of information and hinder your ability to get a well-rounded understanding of the candidate's abilities and preferences.

So, here's the fix: save the coaching conversation (aka feedback) for after the interview. We can gather more information and increase our hiring accuracy by patiently hearing out the candidate's experiences without immediate interruption. After all, we want to make informed decisions based on a comprehensive assessment.

Let's resist the urge to coach during the interview and focus on getting the full picture. The more information we have, the better equipped we are to make the right hiring decision.
