Thinking of moving to Panama? Here’s what you need to know before you pack those bags.
?1. Timing Is Everything. Nobody’s in a rush here. If you’re used to the fast-paced life, ease up a bit. Patience is your friend.
?2. Holiday Overload. Panama is holiday central. With two Independence Days and most holidays falling between November and March, the country practically goes on pause. Don’t expect things to move too fast during these months!
?3. Humidity Hits Hard. Panama’s tropical. The humidity is no joke—it’s like nature’s steam room. Good for your skin, yes, but it’ll hit you the moment you step off the plane.
?4. Low Taxes. Panama boasts some of the lowest taxes globally. For North Americans and Europeans used to high taxes, this can feel like financial freedom. Lower real estate and income taxes make a big difference.
?5. Small World. With around 4 million people, Panama is tiny, and everyone knows everyone. If you’re a decent person, this can be a great thing. But remember, news travels fast here, especially in expat circles.

?6. Language Hurdles. Speaking some Spanish is helpful. While younger Panamanians and professionals may know English, it’s hit-or-miss with others, especially taxi or Uber drivers.
?7. No Daylight Savings. Panama skips the clock-changing dance, so you’ll be on Central Time part of the year and Eastern the other half. No bedtime changes for the kids? Win.
?8. Traffic Woes. Panama City gets pretty jammed up, especially at rush hour. But if you have a flexible schedule, traffic can be totally manageable.
?9. Natural Disaster-Free Zone. Panama is blissfully spared from major natural disasters. A few small earthquakes might hit the north, but hurricanes and tornadoes? Not a chance. Lower insurance costs are a nice bonus.
?10. Happiness All Around. Panama ranks high in global happiness. It could be the climate, the culture, or just the chilled-out vibe, but people here are some of the happiest on the planet. Once you’re here, you might just find yourself smiling more too.
