AVOID INFO OVERLOAD

AVOID INFO OVERLOAD!

?

You are an expert and authority in your field, and your audience needs the benefit of your expertise and experience.

?

Convention keynotes or conference breakout sessions present the perfect opportunities to inform and inspire…especially since your audience CHOSE to be your audience.

?

However, in your zeal to serve them, you could quite easily…though unintentionally…run the risk of doing them a disservice.

?

How?

?

By trying to give them everything you have in your well of experience.

?

As I often tell my coaching clients, “You can’t share everything you know in an hour.” Even with recording devices and copious notetaking, your audience can only absorb so much.

?

Put yourself in their shoes. Better yet, put yourself in the shoes of my associate DJ.

?

Some time ago, DJ attended an event in which a noted celebrity was the featured keynote speaker.

?

As many speakers do, the keynoter used an acronym to make and reinforce their point.

?

As a practice, I recommend that we choose words with no more than FOUR letters.

?

(I confess that I DID create a program that uses SIX, but that was customized for a State Student Council Leadership Convention several years ago. The event theme was ‘SCREAM.’)

?

DJ couldn’t believe it when the speaker said, “The secret of my success boils to simple principles which I’ve summed up using the acronym…

?

W.A.T.E.R.M.E.L.O.N.!”

?

What????

?

Ten…count them…TEN POINTS for the audience to receive, embrace and apply in an hour.

?

Since you’re in DJ’s shoes right now, what goes through your mind when you realize you need to remember TEN POINTS?

?

In my experience, by the time you get to the fifth point, our brains begin to get weary. Perhaps you’ve been there.

?

Here’s my ask for today.

?

Keep it simple.

?

Leave your audience hungry for more.

?

Give them a reason to invite you back, buy your book/training program, or hire you.

?

Your one-off presentation could be the springboard for long-lasting relationships and additional, long-term income.

?

?

AVOID INFO OVERLOAD.

I had to crack up at the "W.A.T.E.R.M.E.L.O.N.!” acronym! Do you think five items is the max number of an acronym like that, Mark?

I cannot imagine the shock of hearing a speaker drop a ten-letter acronym on me. Don’t share with me everything you know in an hour. If you can’t fit an entire watermelon in your mouth, don’t expect me, your audience to digest a whole watermelon of knowledge in one sitting. Got it! The art of simplicity embracing brevity, choosing words with no more than four letters. Forget the watermelons; feasting on these grapes of wisdom, cherries of insight, and the strawberries of knowledge. Short and sweet. My acronym for success: F.U.N. I remember more than once you, Mark Brown, CSP , saying have fun. If we can’t find joy in what we do, then what’s the point? So, ditching the watermelons and leaving room for my audience to breathe, absorb, and savor the knowledge I am sharing.

Mark Brown, CSP Yes, yes, yes! No more than three points. And I love the idea of limiting acronyms to four letters!
