Avoid "FTE" syndrome and close more sales!

Most entrepreneurs, business owners and sales professionals suffer from "FTE" syndrome from time to time. For many, it's a chronic condition.

"FTE" stands for Failure To Engage. Now, I'm not talking about making contact (although that's an issue for many people and a subject for another day). I'm talking about truly ENGAGING your prospect.

After over 30 years of sales and leadership experience I can tell you that many entrepreneurs, business owners and sales professionals simply fail because they do a very poor job of engaging their prospects. Instead of exploring the meaning, impact and value that their offering brings their clients, they get caught up in over-explaining what they do or what they offer instead of what IMPACT it has on their client.

True engagement with your clients comes from delving deeper and finding out so much more than the "basics" of what is needed to do business with someone. To up your engagement "game," you need to get in the habit of asking more meaningful questions of your clients. Here are some important ones to ask:

  • What impact will that have on you?
  • How much would that mean to you?
  • Would that be valuable to you?
  • If you had (this or that) or were able to (do this or that), what would things look like for you?
  • Can you please explain to me why that is important?
  • and many, many others!

To better engage with your prospects or clients, you need to ask more meaningful questions surrounding the impact and value they will receive. You need to ask so they can best envision that being available to them. That step is critical towards increasing their desire for what you offer.
