Avoid These 9 Critical Leadership Mistakes When Searching for Your Dream Job

Avoid These 9 Critical Leadership Mistakes When Searching for Your Dream Job

Based on my recent conversations with seasoned leaders who have been laid off, I've compiled a list of common mistakes to avoid during job transitions. In this blog post, I'll provide actionable tips to help you navigate the job market with confidence and secure your dream role in no time.

?

Mistake #1: What do you do?

As an Executive in transition, you've likely been asked the question, "What do you do?" countless times. It's easy to get caught up in discussing job titles and operational responsibilities, like managing stakeholders, being responsible for P&L, streamlining supply chain processes, and analyzing market data. However, recruiters and hiring managers are more interested in the unique value that you can bring to a role. So, ask yourself, "What is it that only I can do?"

Focus on highlighting the results and outcomes that your actions have triggered. These achievements set you apart from others and make you stand out to potential employers. By emphasizing the value you can offer, you increase your chances of landing a job that aligns with your strengths and goals.

?

Mistake #2: Rambling during the "Tell me about yourself" question.

This is often one of the most nerve-wracking questions to answer. Instead, ask the interviewer what they want to know about you specifically, and tailor your response accordingly. You will be surprised how silent they become. Be sure to highlight your achievements in a concise way. Don't just talk about your past experience, demonstrate the results you've achieved and the benefits that applied for the job.

?

Mistake #3: Undervaluing yourself based on your salary expectations.

Many leaders use their current salary as the metric for their future worth. But your latest payslip is a lag indicator. Basing your worth on these figures can actually hurt you performance-wise and mentally in the long run. Instead, set your worth based on the value you bring and ask the interviewer how important the role is to their organisation. Don’t settle for less than you're worth. Unless you need money.

Mistake #4: Focusing on the "how" rather than the results.

Many candidates talk about what they do (actions), rather than the value they generate. While it's important to showcase your expertise in stakeholder management, project planning, and other technical skills, it's equally important to highlight the unique value you bring to the table. And let me be frank: many leaders struggle with this part. Think about the specific results you have achieved in your previous roles, and how your results have impacted the organisation as a whole. And PRACTICE, practice, practice this story. If you don't own it and believe in your worth neither will your hiring manager.

?

Mistake #5: Forgetting that the interview is a two-way conversation.

As an Executive in transition, it's easy to feel like you're solely being evaluated during an interview. However, it's essential to remember that it's also an opportunity for you to evaluate the organization you're potentially joining. One of the most common mistakes executives make during job interviews is not asking interested, validating, and deep questions. This is your chance to demonstrate your interest in the company, gain a better understanding of its values, biggest leadership challenges, impossible goals, and evaluate its alignment with your long-term aspirations. Bu curious big time.

Mistake #6: Neglecting energy

Transitioning to a new leadership position can be a challenging experience that can cause anxiety, stress, and worry, especially if you feel like you're racing against the clock and are the primary breadwinner. But don't let the pressures of the job hunt take a toll on your emotional and mental well-being. It's crucial to manage your energy and prioritise your state of mind throughout the process.

Many people underestimate the impact of their mental state on the outcome of their efforts. Now that you know the importance of your state of mind, it's crucial to prioritise your mental and emotional health. When you take time to rest, relax, and care for your well-being, you increase your likelihood of producing high-quality CVs, crafting compelling cover letters, and making positive and lasting impressions during interviews. So, don't neglect your energy, and remember to prioritise self-care during this challenging but transformative time in your career and life.

?

Mistake #7: Relying solely on your network to find a job.

While networking is an important part of the job search process, relying solely on your network to find a job can be a mistake. Instead of simply asking your network if they know of any open positions, take the time to explore your own career dreams. Be bold and bet on yourself and your desires. Remove any limiting self-talk. Take the time to craft a clear and concise career vision that aligns with your values and passions. Your future self will thank you for it. Remember, owning your dreams is the first step in making them a reality.

Mistake #8: Neglecting self-worth

Many leaders underestimate the importance of their self-worth when it comes to job hunting. Low self-worth can lead to self-sabotage, negative self-talk, and a lack of confidence in interviews. It's crucial to rediscover your achievements, be proud of who you are, and build up your self-worth to succeed in your job search. Remember, the way you value yourself sets the standard for how others value you. Don't let low self-worth hold you back from your dream job.

Mistake #9: Ignoring the journey

Focusing only on the end result can be a recipe for disappointment and burnout. Instead, take time to enjoy the process and celebrate your growth along the way. Don't let a rejection or setback discourage you from continuing to learn and improve. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.

So what?

Changing jobs can be a challenging, yet thrilling experience that presents opportunities for growth and development. As a seasoned leader, you bring valuable expertise and skills to the table. It's important to remember that the job interview is a two-way audition, where you also need to assess if the company aligns with your values, culture and leadership style.
