Avoid These 6 Goal-Setting Mistakes

How to Change Your 2024

January means only one thing: Goal-setting.

Maybe it’s more money, a new job, losing some weight. There’s always something to do in the New Year.

The problem is that long-lasting transformation isn’t straightforward.

It takes patience and hard work.

You may feel lost with personal development. Like you don’t have the tools or self-belief to get what you need.

Reverting to old habits feels like failure. It’s demotivating.

These experiences stop you from attempting change in the future.

Did you know, that 95% of New Year’s Resolutions are abandoned by the second week of January?

Shocking, right?

In today’s Newsletter, I’m going to explain what bad goal setting looks like. So you can stay away from poor practice and set yourself up for a successful 2024.

Christmas

If you’re like 99% of the population, Christmas often means 2 things: overeating and laziness.

By December 1st, you’re done with work, exhausted and needing a break. The festive period comes at the perfect time.

A relaxing time to spend with friends and family.

We put weight on. We feel sluggish, regretting the self-indulgence.

So, you set off on a goal-setting mission.

“January’s here and it’s time to sort myself out”, you say.

If you’re like most people, you set goals that are never specified. Most of the time not even written down.

You race to the gym and start lifting weights. You’ve got your new gear on and you feel energised.

But, because your goals weren’t written properly, your enthusiasm fades.

Cashing out

It’s easy to revert to old ways. Especially when you don’t see a return on your investment.

You get back on the hamster wheel. You return to an unsatisfactory life.

There’s always next year, right?

I’ll take a wild guess that you're struggling to make long-lasting changes in your life. And this is because you don't know HOW to do it.

Don’t worry, most people do.

So, let me help…

To succeed you must have an aim. You need a goal that inspires you to take consistent action (not only in January!)

This goal must inspire you to change your identity. To become the person you know you can be.

Effective goals energise. They give you the push to get out of bed on that cold January morning to attend your hit session

So, how do you find that inspiring goal for 2024?

Here are 6 Goal-Setting Mistakes to avoid:

1. To-do lists

To-do lists are for shopping. Not your goals.

In the past, I’d sit down on New Year’s Eve and I’d write down what I wanted to achieve in the following year. It would be a list from 1-10.

Some I’d hit, some I wouldn’t. It was a lazy way of setting goals. It wasn’t focused. It was generic and underdeveloped.

Effective goals are detailed and focused. You must find one thing you’re aiming for and double down on the detail you apply to it.

2. Uninspiring rubbish

Boring goals set you up for failure. A bad goal won’t get you out of bed when you feel under the weather, or tired.

You must be able to push yourself through adversity. An effective goal drives you towards success.

The key is to think long and hard about what is going to inspire you. Don’t stop until you’ve discovered that feeling.

3. Copying

Don’t aim for something because you think someone else would be impressed by it. This goes for your parents, your partner, even your friends.

This is about what you want. Who you truly want to be. The only person to impress is yourself.

Be authentic. Go for something that would make your future self proud.

4. Goals that don’t elevate

No one wants to go around in circles. Make sure you set yourself a target that enhances your personal growth.

If you don’t speak well in public, try speaking at events. If you want to expand your horizons, try picking up a new language.

How can you get yourself to the next level in 2024?

5. Zero transformation

An effective goal should be centred on your transformation. The best goals enable you to make long-lasting changes.

Whether this is in your career, relationships or physical fitness. Imagine how you could transform yourself.

And don’t hold back!

6. Limiting yourself!

Predetermined outcomes are foolish. Just because you’ve failed before doesn’t mean you’ll fail again.

Self-belief is paramount to your future success. Have faith in the future. You’ve got to be able to see a version of yourself that inspires you to take action.

Stretch yourself, and see what happens. You never know, you might just achieve what you want.
