India's aviation achieves milestone: passenger traffic crosses 5 lakh

A crucial milestone for Indian aviation was marked on November 17, 2024, showing the country's increasing dominance in the international aviation arena. With a precise count of 5,05,412 people, India witnessed more than 5 lakh domestic travelers take to the skies on this historic day. For the first time, the number of domestic flights has crossed the 5-lakh threshold in a single day.

3,100 flights operated nationwide, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Domestic air travel has increased significantly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik scheme on October 21, 2016. The government credits this expansion to passenger-friendly policies and reasonably priced flights, which have propelled the Indian aviation industry to unprecedented heights.

Southeast Asia works to get to net zero

It has long been known that financing is a hindrance to Southeast Asia's rapid decarbonization. Two factors will be crucial to a successful transition to a low-carbon economy, particularly in the low- and middle-income nations in the region. The first is international concessional finance, and the second is stronger climate targets to accelerate investor interest. At COP29, both are expected to be decided.

According to the Paris Agreement, nations must revise their Nationally Determined Contributions by February 2025. Leaders will also unveil the New Collective Quantified Goal, a new set of financial commitments to help developing nations with their climate actions after 2025. Even though the majority of Southeast Asian nations currently have ambitious long-term renewable energy goals, the necessary investments are still behind schedule.
