The Average Drone Company

If you could look at all the drone companies in the world, what would the average drone company look like?

Although we have not spoken to every drone company in the world [yet], our latest global survey provides some insights into what commercial drone companies all around the world are doing. Based on 1,113 responses in the latest edition of our survey, here is a glimpse into what many of them do.

Our latest survey confirms that the drone industry is a service-oriented industry. That means that the biggest share of activity taking place are drone companies that use drones to provide services to others. This includes inspections, deliveries, photography, surveying... and many other application methods in dozens of industries.

Officially, the second most common activity in the global industry is Drone Training and Education Services. This makes sense considering that the continuous growth of the market leads to more and more opportunities for those who know how to operate drones safely and effectively.

How big is the average drone company?

Based on the data from our latest survey, the average company is somewhere between 1-10 or 11-50 employees, though a numerical average would put it closer to 51-200. There are of course still several companies that have over 5,000 employees or even more than 10,000, but it remains the case that a vast majority of drone companies are either startups or sustainably small operations with less than 200 workers.

Which country has the most drone companies?

When looking at drone companies in general, it is hard to define an "average" when it comes to location. And although our survey has different degrees of penetration in various regions, it is safe to say that North America and Asia remain the top drone regions in the world. Therefore, despite not knowing the exact number of drone companies that are active all over the world, we can say that a large concentration of drone companies are located in the US, China, and Japan.

It is worth noting that the data still needs to be broken down and classified further. Oftentimes, a company that does more than one activity will classify themselves as "Other", which is why that is currently the second largest category in the graphic above. For other questions, the specific data will need to be cleaned and consolidated, such as when the survey system turned a 10% into a 1 or if Excel turned a 1-10 into an October 1st (#excelproblems).

But the upshot is that drone industry is so diverse that there is likely no such thing as an "average drone company". And that is why we will begin a series of articles about several regions and countries. It is imperative to emphasize that these will not be in-depth authoritative research on country markets like the Drone Market Studies we've done about Germany, Switzerland, Norway, etc. Instead, they are meant to provide a brief glimpse into these regions and countries based on data from our latest survey alone.

So stay tuned for the upcoming series in a couple of weeks, and look forward to some individualized insights on particular drone markets! As usual, our email audience will be the first to receive the insights, so don't forget to sign up here:

This is reflective of the type of Industry research expected from a class of company, like Droneii. It would also be useful to gain insight into the "financial shape" that the range of drone-related, companies are in - and the comparison of "margins" realized between drone manufacturers/providers vs. service-based, companies. If this maps-onto other Industry segments - it is likely that the service-based, companies will outperform the product-based, companies. As a form of reference - take a look at the DOD business - where programmatics, maintainability, Life-cycle Support and other services represent 60% of the profit on target programs - and the Aviation field - where MRO companies experience a 40%-50%+ margin, depending on the services performed. Will continue to look for your informative reports and studies.
