The Avengers of COVID-19
Hamad M. Al Hosani
Director of Human Capital & Emiratisation | Chairman of Youth Council | AD Ports Group | KEZAD Group | Ports, Economic Cities & Logistics
Back in 2020, I was a part of another organization that was in the process of merging with AD Ports Group, when we were hit by not just the enormous task of managing a smooth merger for two of the largest organizations in their fields; but also the unforeseen ‘new normal’ introduced with the classification of COVID-19 as a pandemic.
My entire, relatively long list of initiatives and goals for the year went out of the window as we began maneuvering through this upheaval of everything that we had taken for granted thus far in life. All of my new plans centered on establishing rules for a changed world, and ensuring that the employee workforce was safe, supported, and connected. The bigger challenge was making sure that that no employee felt isolated and alone, and they truly felt part of the AD Ports Group family.
Transition became more than just adapting to a new job and a new company, it became about adapting to a new lifestyle. We had to become more resilient, responsible, and self-aware because there was no playbook, guideline, or set of rules for dealing with this new reality. I understood that the HR Division had to be repositioned as a key player in crisis management, preparation, and response. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????
As HR Business Partners, we played a critical role in promoting dialogues between managers and employees, fostering organizational trust, ensuring employee commitment, and supporting leaders on a personal and team level more than ever before. All of this was achieved while working around the clock to maintain productivity at AD Ports Group especially to keep ports and supply chains open so that vitals like food and medical supplies are available for the nation.
Furthermore, we are blessed to have one of the best digital infrastructures at AD Ports Group. Technology became our greatest ally, and we were able to easily implement new work-from-home protocols while maintaining strong communication with our employees.
Since communication was critical to maintaining a sense of unity and togetherness during this critical period, we had to be open and honest with employees, stay ahead of developments and provide frequent updates to staff, meet them on a regular basis, listen to their concerns, and address their needs. Of course, we had to recognize the special circumstances of our employees and show compassion. Part of the steps we took for the well-being of our colleagues was to announce our Happiness Doctor partnership with a well-known medical Centre. This unique collaboration gave employees access to individual sessions with a psychologist, who assisted them with any issues concerning their well-being during the new type of stresses of working from home.
Our HR services quickly adapted to provide employees with confidence, job security, and resources to help them and their families. Trust was maintained and continuous engagement played a vital role in helping employees adapt seamlessly into work from home and then safely back to work under social distancing protocols.
Throughout the pandemic, we were extremely fortunate at AD Ports Group; Businesses were closing around the globe and layoffs were affecting the community. However, we were growing during this time and adding more to our business portfolio. Which meant more jobs, and yes, we were hiring! Career succession continued, training continued and even our rewards scheme continued during the pandemic.
I am extremely proud of how AD Ports Group handled the pandemic and let every employee and their family not worry about losing their job, health, or well-being. Instead, we rewarded our front liners and proudly recognized the tremendous achievements of our employees in performing their duties. We have invested a lot in supporting our employees and we are dedicated to continuing our drive to be one of the top organizations in the UAE.
