Smokers who still think vaping is dangerous

The proportion of smokers who believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking has remained static since 2021 (32%). Only 14% of smokers correctly believe that vaping is “a lot less harmful” than smoking combustible tobacco, according to a new study. This is why it's important for retailers to participate in campaigns such as Stoptober to increase?awareness of the dangers of smoking tobacco and normalise vaping to make it more accessible to those who are looking to quit smoking.

Retailers can offer advice on choosing the right e-cigarette/e-liquid, and signpost customers to resources provided by the NHS (or any other notable Stop Smoking services) where they can get more help and support.?

As a result, retailers who participate in campaigns such as Stoptober are not only helping to improve public health, but they are also helping to grow their vaping category.

More Smokers Are Trying Out Vapes

While the proportion of adult smokers who have never tried e-cigarettes is still fairly high, it is slowly declining, from 30.1% in 2021 to 28% currently.?This is likely due to the increasing availability of e-cigarettes and the growing awareness of their potential as a smoking cessation tool. The proportion of smokers who are current vapers has also increased, from 17% in 2021 to 22% in 2022.?

Flavours

A new report from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has lent credence to the argument that flavours play an important role in helping smokers switch to vaping.?

The report found that the most popular flavours among vapers are fruit flavours, favoured by 41% of respondents, followed by menthol at 19%. Only 16% of all adult vapers use a tobacco flavour.?

This is significant because it indicates that for many people, the taste is a key factor in choosing to vape instead of smoke. This is something that opponents of vaping have long claimed is only designed to attract children.?
