AV and the BIM Execution plan

AV and the BIM Execution plan

Audio Visual design in the BIM environment can be a fickle concept - Autodesk's Revit didn't include "Audio Visual" as a category until 2022. (I know, I know there's Bentley and Navvis but let's stay focused!)

Simply "designing in Revit" does not qualify as BIM but the project management, workflow and desired outcome that surrounds the design objectives could...

But how do you get there? This starts upstream with the BEP - BIM Execution Plan. Acronyms inside of acronyms, isn't that cool?

Why should AV care about a BIM Execution Plan?

AV systems are integral to the functionality and user experience of modern companies and their buildings - From conference rooms and auditoriums to digital signage and training rooms, AV technology is a core feature that is only growing.

Early Coordination: By involving AV consultants early in the BIM process, potential conflicts can be identified and resolved before construction begins. This proactive approach minimizes costly changes and delays.

Why integrating AV early in BIM projects is a game-changer

Accurate Modeling: Detailed 3D models of AV systems, including equipment placement and cable routing, ensure precise installation and coordination with other building systems. This accuracy leads to better space utilization and reduced installation time.

Model Content and Level of Detail (LOD):

The Level of Detail (LOD) required for different BIM elements, specifies how comprehensively building components are modeled, from basic shapes to detailed representations with specific materials and properties - Properties are often overlooked.

A well-defined BEP fosters collaboration among all project stakeholders, including architects, engineers, contractors, and AV consultants. This collaboration ensures that everyone understands the project's AV requirements and contributes to a unified vision.

Integrating AV into the BEP enhances the overall quality of the project. By leveraging BIM's capabilities, such as clash detection and automated documentation, teams can deliver high-quality AV systems that meet the project's specifications and client expectations.

Benefits of a thought-out BIM Execution Plan:

  • Improved communication and collaboration among project stakeholders
  • Reduced risk of errors and clashes during construction
  • Enhanced design and visualization capabilities
  • Increased efficiency and productivity
  • Streamlined construction process
  • Better facility management and maintenance (when BIM data is used for ongoing building operations)

Now as AV consultants, we don't get to necessarily formulate the wonderful BEP but we must be privy to it and help the design process by thoroughly understanding how we fit into the big picture.
