AUVSI Supports North Dakota Executive Budget for UAS

Last week, AUVSI submitted letters of support for North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum’s 2023-2025 Executive Budget.?Governor Burgum announced his budget in December with his Budget Address, which includes $37 million in total for the UAS industry. This breaks down to $30 million for?VANTIS, the State’s Beyond the?Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Network, and $7 million for the development of the?Grand Sky?business and aviation park.

State funding is instrumental for the success of the uncrewed systems industry?and provides immense public benefits for the state itself. Through strong investment into this emerging technology, North Dakota is creating space for a new industry that will create new jobs and bring in outside commercial investment. North Dakota remains one of the fastest growing states, and by welcoming the UAS industry they are diversifying their economy away from their traditional top sectors to ensure long-term economic stability.

North Dakota?has already established themselves as leaders in the UAS industry, with Vantis being the first of its kind, and just last week one of their partner companies being awarded the first waiver from the FAA to operate beyond the visual line of site using the network. In continuing to support state programs, and by taking steps to expand the use of drones through new investments like the Grand Sky Park, Governor Burgum is ensuring that North Dakota is ready to take advantage of all the commercial drone industry has to offer.

Through the Executive Budget, the Governor is already moving forward on AUVSI’s?Drone Prepared Plan, initiating Step One by finding opportunities to promote drone use for public benefit.?The?provided investment into the UAS industry will provide employment opportunities and sustained economic growth, leading to numerous benefits all North Dakotans can enjoy.

AUVSI applauds?Governor Burgum and North Dakota for the investments and support they continue to bring to the UAS industry, and we look forward to continuing to support the State on expanding commercial drone operations.

UND was at the forefront in many ways back in 2006 when I was a student. Great UAS environment!
