Autumn is Upon Us!

t seems like just yesterday that we were singing: “Oooooooooo, summer’s here and winter’s far away at the 6th Annual Ice Cream Sunday. And now, Autumn is upon us! That’s A-OK with me, though, as I really enjoy the seasonal changes. We had a pretty good growing season this year as well, with lots of hot peppers and cherry tomatoes harvested - mmmmmm, good!

But, I also really enjoy the other seasons, here in Colorado and one of my very favorite times of year is the last bloom of Summer, transitioning into Fall. Most of the flowers and plants get a kind of second wind in September and we get a final flush of color in our gardens - although it is a bittersweet affair when we do our yard and garden winterization process early in October. Anything green or blooming stays, but everything going dormant or drying up must be chopped.

At this time we also pick up all of the gnomes and yard decor, lights, etc., and stash ‘em all away for the winter. Very efficient, I must admit but all winter when I go out to the garage, I see a barrage of sad little gnomes out in the freezing cold. I am appeased by the prospect of holiday decorating, however, and I know that another Spring and Summer will come around.

I also believe that Autumn is a great time for reflection on one’s life and an opportunity to clarify a personal mission or vision before a winter of planning and a Spring of active renewal - which, of course, leads to big ol’ summer fun! But for Autumn, I enjoy slowing down the pace a bit and enjoying some rituals and the holidays I observe. There is a special something about the first sweater or flannel shirt of the season that feels extra cozy. Add a warm beverage or soup, and?I am - as my math professor used to put it - golden.
