Autumn Splendour and Offerings
Day 34 - Fonfria to Samos, Camino de Santiago

Autumn Splendour and Offerings

It’s been a while since we last connected and I’m delighted to be with you again. You may remember I planned to walk the Camino de Santiago, an 800 km (500 mile) pilgrimage from France and across Spain, setting off towards the end of May with no deadline for when I’d finish. It would take as long as it would take and that felt such a novel, unexplored luxury.

Releasing the rigidity and constraints that time places on us transforms our relationship with ourselves and the world around us, resulting in an immense sense of freedom. I discovered how life begins to flow with its own rhythm, profoundly influencing our sensory perception on physical, mental, and emotional levels.

Camino

Reflecting on my entire Camino journey, I realise the need to honour the generous time I was given along the path. In return, as a way of paying it forward, I aim to bring the same care and mindful presence, taking time to thoughtfully consider how best to share my reflections, insights, and appreciation.

For now, I will share that I was surprised by how capable I became physically and humbled by mental challenges.

I’ll also admit that I was taken completely by surprise when I entered Santiago de Compostela, passed the bagpipe player playing haunting music under the arch, checked my app to see which side I’d be approaching the Cathedral of Santiago and was caught off guard when I saw the app’s Camino yellow line I’d followed for hundreds of kilometres promptly end. I found tears prickling, rolling down my cheeks and the weirdest sense of loss. It was so unexpected. I wasn’t ready to finish.

I walked for another 120 km to Finisterre (derived from Latin Finis Terrea, believed to be ‘the end of the known world’) and then on to Muxia, where I made my way up to the point of the peninsular and sat alone on the rocks early in the morning looking across the wild, vibrant ocean and felt complete to close the journey.
