Autoware Foundation Quarterly | A thorough recap
Autoware Foundation
The world’s leading open-source software project for autonomous driving
Do you want to catch up with what’s happening at the Autoware Foundation? We have recently started the monthly Technical Steering Committee newsletter on LinkedIn to give you the latest from the technical work carried out at the Autoware project.
Similarly, we are now publishing quarterly Autoware Foundation newsletters on LinkedIn. This newsletter will summarize the non-technical activities at the Autoware Foundation every quarter.
What to expect from the quarterly newsletters?
Historically, Autoware Foundation newsletters were published every quarter, but those newsletters were member-only. We opened up the newsletters to the broader public last year. If you want to receive these quarterly newsletters in your inbox, please subscribe to our mailing list ?? https://eepurl.com/hnpUqT
What do we talk about in the quarterly newsletters? Here’s a non-exhaustive list:
We did not do the quarterly newsletter for some time, so we’re restarting this with a wrap-up newsletter!
Don’t forget to subscribe to this newsletter to receive up-to-date news from the Autoware Foundation!
Autoware Foundation Taiwan Chapter is officially launched.
Autoware Foundation established its first overseas chapter in Taiwan with the collaboration of the Taiwan Telematics Industry Association.
Autoware Foundation Taiwan Chapter will connect to Taiwan’s rich autonomous driving industry value chain with local working groups, Open Data WG, Low-speed Vehicle WG and Smart Cockpit WG.

Bus ODD movie is on Autoware Foundation's YouTube Channel.
Built on the joint work between Leo Drive and ANADOLU ISUZU , we produced a beautiful use-case demo video, explaining not only what is covered at Bus ODD work but also how we orchestrated the project with various stakeholders, how the technical development is undertaken and what Autoware tools we used for the work.
The Bus ODD work is planned to be demonstrated in Turkey and Taiwan. While the existing video covers the Turkey demo, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)(工業技術研究院, 工研院) ’s public road-going bus ODD demo is a work in progress. Stay tuned for the conclusion of this effort.

The new members joined the Autoware Foundation.
Since we released the last quarterly newsletter, six new members have joined the Autoware Foundation.
More prospective members are in the pipeline. You will see more industry leaders will be joining the Autoware Foundation in the coming weeks and months.
The New Autoware Foundation Board is on duty!
The co-founders of Autoware, Shinpei Kato ( TIER IV ) and Yang Zhang (AutoCore.ai ), remained on the board of the Autoware Foundation. Samet Kütük has joined them from Leo Drive (who also leads the Marketing/Go-To-Market workgroup), Rahul Mangharam from the 美国宾夕法尼亚大学 (who heads the Centers of Excellence initiative), and Larry Dimitrievski from Danlaw, Inc. , all of whom have joined the Autoware Foundation Board of Directors to help bring the Autoware project to new levels of success.
Indy Autonomous Challenge Sim Races are starting!
Autoware Foundation and Indy Autonomous Challenge partnered (and supported by Autonoma, Inc .) to provide a new way to participate in the Indy Autonomous Challenge, breaking down barriers to funding or physical vehicle availability. The first official IAC Sim Race will take place during CES 2024, and currently, we’re in the open practice phase. Registrations are now open at https://www.indyautonomouschallenge.com/simracesevents
Tech blog posts keep coming in!
The Autoware community keeps on creating more technical material and tutorials where they deep dive into many facets of the Autoware project, sometimes related to the software-defined paradigms, sometimes related to challenges ahead of mass deployment, or sometimes simply creating step-by-step tutorials on how to use different messaging/communication layer to run Autoware on.
Here are the latest tech blog posts on the Autoware Foundation website:
The New Autoware Foundation website is live!
We refreshed the Autoware Foundation website and branding, eliminated all out-of-date information, and now offer a lively and ever-growing platform for all Autoware lovers to use and enjoy. Special thanks to Monroe Creative Studio and Basework , who worked with us on this adventure.

Open AD Kit demo at AVTE Stuttgart
We have many Open AD Kit demos available now to exhibit at industry events, and one of the latest was based on Autoware’s planning component. This demo incorporated the Over-the-Air (OTA) update functionality from eSync Alliance .
The main idea was to showcase how an autonomous driving function can be updated via a software update where we demonstrated the behavior change of the planning module before and after an OTA update. This demo is being documented and further improved for future industry events (ideally with a cloud-native workflow included and with an interactive element for visitors to experience)
Autoware Challenge 2023
The Autoware Challenge began on May 15, continues until November 1, 2023, and is hosted and sponsored by TIER IV .
As one of the main contributors of Autoware, TIER IV has faced many complex challenges through development. Hence, TIER IV decided to sponsor a challenge to solve such engineering challenges. Through the challenge, participants will choose one of the challenges proposed by AWF/TIER IV and present their solution to the selected challenge. TIER IV will examine the presentation and choose a winner who came up with the best solution that improves Autoware functionality.
Proposal submissions are continuing; however, the registration and abstract deadline has passed. Stay tuned for the announcement of the results, where monetary prizes will be awarded to the first three teams (??1st: 15,000 USD, ??2nd: 7,000 USD, and ??3rd: 3,500 USD)
Autoware Workshop at IEEE IV 2023 in Anchorage, Alaska
On June 4-7, a landmark event for Autoware Foundation, IEEE IV 23, took place in Anchorage, Alaska. Autoware Foundation held a full-day Autoware workshop, including a tutorial session, during the conference. We’re hoping to release the tutorial recordings soon on our YouTube channel.
Autoware Centers of Excellence continue to grow!
Initiated and headquartered at the 美国宾夕法尼亚大学 , the Autoware Centers of Excellence initiative keeps growing rapidly. Now existing on three continents, some 23 universities and research institutions are working together on taking the Autoware project to new heights.
While maintaining the orchestration of all CoE members, UPenn CoE HQ is also working on many fronts, including the development of an open-source EV go-kart chassis for research use, organizing the appearances at important conferences and symposiums including ICRA and IEEE IV, in conjunction with the The Roboracer Foundation , supporting the F1Tenth races for autonomous racing and many others.
Soon, with the regional affiliations, many more Autoware CoE establishments are expected.
Open AD Kit demo at #IROS2023
Open AD Kit demos are ramping up. We already have two demos built this year, and the scope of the second demo was to showcase containerized Autoware running on an EV skateboard chassis powered by a SOAFEE -enabled compute platform and controlling the vehicle actuation!

This demo was a big milestone for the Open AD Kit because it performed real autonomous driving tasks on a real vehicle. Now we can work on a vehicle. The obvious next step would be to achieve complex driving scenarios with a safety case.
Stay tuned for more Open AD Kit demos.
Excited to work with the Mack Institute for Innovation Management of The Wharton School
Autoware Foundation is excited to work with the Mack Institute for Innovation Management of 美国宾夕法尼亚大学 - 沃顿商学院 on the AV4EV project.
AV4EV project envisions bringing two major trends (autonomous vehicles and electrification) in the automotive industry together to find answers to important questions. While these new technologies hold tremendous potential in reducing carbon emissions, improving safety, enhancing mobility, and increasing efficiency, there are still significant challenges from the business side of AV and EV adoption.
We started working on three projects with the MACK Institute:
