An article in the Wall Street Journal this week announced that Norway will launch the first autonomous ship next year https://www.wsj.com/articles/norway-takes-lead-in-race-to-build-autonomous-cargo-ships-1500721202 in the same article it advises that Rolls Royce hope to launch a robotic ship by 2020.
Maritime security is currently a huge focus for numerous security researchers (including ourselves) as it is a quick win due to some terrible examples of poor security and insufficient network segregation. Last week it was found that numerous ships had not changed their default SAILOR 900 VSAT passwords and were accessible remotely https://mashable.com/2017/07/18/hacking-boats-is-fun-and-easy/#otAfXfyJNaO4
I'm not suggesting for a minute that these robotic ships will be vulnerable, but they will certainly be targeted and without a human crew to take back control, I hope the manufacturers are taking security seriously. I mean nobody has managed to hack a car yet.... oh wait, yes they have.

7 年On a positive note the risk of piracy and kidnap to the crews will be gone, ransom payments for personnel gone. I believe autonomous ships have been tried in the past to limited success, I think she was called the Mary Celeste.....

7 年On one hand a really sensible idea. There's certainly a lot less to hit than on the roads. On the other hand, there ar ethings to hit. And the threat of autonomour takeover/cyber attacks is clear. And what about the piracy threat.... I can only assume this has been thought through. But I have my doubts as well!
they will take security seriously. lol, the answer from the car industry during blackhat to the hacking issue was to install AV Software, that says it all...
