Autonomous ferry in the making

The ground-breaking autonomous ferry is taking shape at Br?drene Aa’s shipyard and is on track with the plan.?In a few months, it will be ready for launch.

The family-owned shipyard is located between the steep mountain walls in Hyenfjorden in Western Norway.

In the heart of the Hyenfjorden in Western Norway, lies the world-leading shipyard Br?drene a. The familyowned company is known for pioneering composite materials for fast ferry applications, first with fiberglass composites in the 1970s and today with carbon fibre composites.

Now an innovation is in the making; In just a femonths the world's first commercial autonomous passenger ferry will be launched in Stockholm. But first it must be certified and approved by the Swedish Transport Agency, and senior ship surveyor, Martin Blom, has traveled from Sweeden to inspect the work.

Br?drene Aa has built over 300 composite vessels since the 1970s, with the last 60 utilizing carbon fiber composite construction. Tailored solutions are essential to their success.

CEO Tor ?yvin Aa on the importance of material selection is when building new vessels. By exploiting composite production expertise, Br?drene Aa re-defined the fast-ferry business in the early 2000s with the worlds first commercial passenger vessel made in carbon fibre. This tecnology-breakthrough has led to a new a era of shipbuilding for Br?drene Aa.

Team effort: Close collaboration between the Torghatten, Br?drene Aa, and Zeabuz is vital when the first commercial autonomous ferry service takes shape. The autonomous system, the ferry hull, and the service design must be aligned to create a safe and efficient shortcut across Riddarfj?rden.
