According to a recent article published on Statista.com, the global autonomous vehicle market is projected to surge from $41 billion in 2024 to an impressive $115 billion by 2029. This growth signals the tremendous potential of autonomous driving, but as with any transformative technology, there are significant challenges that need to be addressed before full-scale adoption can occur.

Challenges Facing the Autonomous Vehicle Industry

As the market accelerates, the complexity of fully autonomous technology continues to pose roadblocks. According to recent reports, 73% of cars in the UK are expected to have partial autonomy (Levels 1-3) by 2025, but full autonomy remains elusive due to a few key hurdles:

  1. Lack of consistent 5G or high-speed internet: Many self-driving systems depend on reliable, fast connectivity to communicate, gather real-time data, and adjust to road conditions. However, consistent 5G coverage is far from universal, making this a major obstacle to autonomous vehicle adoption.
  2. Heavy reliance on HD maps: Traditional autonomous driving systems require highly detailed maps to safely navigate, which are both expensive and difficult to maintain (as well as limited, geographically). These maps must constantly be updated to reflect new road conditions, obstacles, or construction.
  3. Public safety concerns: Beyond the technical challenges, public trust is crucial. Although over 40% of consumers are open to using autonomous cars, more than half are worried about safety, and 30% are unsure if the technology is advanced enough in its current state.

How Imagry Overcomes These Challenges

From the April 2024 edition of ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International

At Imagry, we’re breaking through these barriers with an HD-mapless and self-sufficient solution that is paving the way for the future of autonomous driving. By leveraging our proprietary AI-based, real-time perception and motion planning technology, we offer a robust and scalable alternative to traditional systems—one that does not rely on 5G nor pre-loaded HD maps.

Instead of depending on detailed maps, our technology uses cameras and multiple AI neural networks to perceive the vehicle’s surroundings in real-time and then make informed motion planning decisions dynamically—just like a human driver. This allows Imagry’s system to perform safely and reliably, with location independence and without requiring outside connectivity or massive data inputs.

Safety is at the Core of Imagry’s Technology

At Imagry, safety isn’t just a feature—it’s our foundation. Our bio-inspired system mimics the decision-making process of a highly skilled human driver, combining:

  • Multiple cameras to provide 360° vision and real-time detection of objects, pedestrians, traffic signs, road markings, and obstacles.
  • AI-powered motion planning, which processes data with computing power far exceeding that of the human brain. For instance, the NVIDIA DRIVE Orin? SoC, integrated with our software, can perform 254 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second)—allowing rapid and accurate decision-making in unpredictable conditions.

Imagry’s proactive approach to safety ensures our system doesn’t just comply with standards—it goes further to anticipate and mitigate risks before they occur. We use intelligent algorithms to assess road conditions, monitor potential hazards, and plan the vehicle’s actions accordingly, always prioritizing the safety of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

Innovative Safety Features: Safe Driver Overwatch

In addition to our autonomous driving capabilities, we’ve developed Safe Driver Overwatch?, a unique feature that acts as a "shadow driver," ensuring responsible driving behavior. This feature is particularly important for novice or elderly drivers, and those experiencing fatigue. Key features of Safe Driver Overwatch include:

  • Adhering to speed limits: Automatically adjusting the vehicle’s speed to comply with posted speed limits and the “Basic Speed Law,” ensuring safe driving even in challenging conditions.
  • Responding to traffic signals and signs: The vehicle slows or stops for traffic lights, follows right-of-way rules at stop signs, and safely navigates roundabouts and intersections.
  • Pedestrian anticipation: Imagry’s system monitors pedestrian movement, adjusting the vehicle’s trajectory to avoid collisions.

By prioritizing both passenger and pedestrian safety, Safe Driver Overwatch acts as a vigilant co-pilot, especially useful for drowsy drivers or those with diminished reflexes. This feature aligns with our mission to create a safer driving environment for everyone.

Fostering Public Trust and Education

We understand that building public confidence in autonomous driving technology is essential for its adoption. That’s why Imagry is a proud member of Partners for Automated Vehicle Education (PAVE) , helping to educate the public on the benefits and safety of autonomous driving. Through our educational initiatives and transparent communication, we aim to dispel myths and create a broader understanding of how autonomous vehicles can transform mobility while enhancing safety.

Imagry’s Vision for a Safer, Greener Future

Our commitment extends beyond technology. Imagry is dedicated to driving innovation in a way that also supports the global transition to clean, renewable energy. By developing mapless autonomous driving software that is LiDAR-free and designed with electric vehicles in mind, we’re contributing to greener urban mobility and reducing emissions—helping to build a more sustainable future.

Real-World Success: Imagry in Action

Our technology isn’t just theoretical—it’s already operational in the real world. Since 2019, Imagry has been driving autonomously on public roads in the U.S., Germany, Japan, and Israel. We have also launched autonomous bus projects in mixed traffic in the Sheba Medical Center and in the city of Nahariya, Israel, demonstrating that our solution is ready for diverse and complex environments today.

Imagry’s cutting-edge HD-mapless technology is positioning us as a leader in the L3/L4 autonomous driving space, offering a flexible and scalable solution that overcomes the core challenges facing the industry.
