The Automation Race

Anyone who has ever suffered waiting in a long line at the grocery store has dreamed of a store like Amazon Go.

For the uninitiated, the aforementioned is Amazon’s experimental convenience store in downtown Seattle. A series of cameras and sensor analyze what shoppers put in their carts, and their accounts are automatically charged when they walk out the door. No waiting in line – just grab and go.

This is part of a larger trend of retail automation.

Amazon is not the only retailer experimenting in this space. From the now familiar self-checkout, to unmanned convenience stores, to robots that check stock levels, automation technologies are quickly embedding themselves into retail.

This trend is yet another reminder that a customer-centric experience is the way retailers will remain relevant in a quickly changing world.
