Automation in our day-to-day lives - thoughts from a former Automation and Business Transformation Seller

This is the one idea I had on my mind every time I walked into a customer office while selling Robotic Process Automation:

How can I make people aware that Automation is not something new and that it exists everywhere around them?

So here are my thoughts:

Welcome home! Automation these days is not something that happens just at work (with RPA, Automation, and Process Transformation) but something that already happens in our lives. From Alexa, Siri, and Google to having smart lightning, robotic vacuums, and more – automation is already part of our lives and it’s here to stay. We could actually say we’re continuously doing process transformation at home as all of our usual chores and tasks got observed and then transformed by introducing different pieces of automation in our own life.

Whether we want to save time because we want more relaxation or we want to deal with everything easier, automating our lives is always the best answer.

There are many benefits of having automation in our day-to-day lives.

Here are the main 3 - very similar to what companies look at when implementing automation: time, productivity, and making life and work much easier.

1. Time

Time is truly the most important benefit that we can get from automation. Time isn't one of those things that we can buy. But we can always buy machines and systems that will help us save some time, so we can enjoy some more of it.

Many of us already wake up to this experience:

  • The coffee is ready for us to drink;
  • The house was cleaned while we slept;
  • The dishes are done;
  • And our pet is fed.

We wake up to this dream just by simply purchasing different machines that do the job for us, such as:

  • A smart coffee maker that can be scheduled to complete the task at the exact minute when we wake up.
  • A robot vacuum cleaner that runs, cleans and washes around the house whenever we wish it to do so.
  • An automatic washing machine that can be turned on and off and even scheduled by our phone.
  • A smart pet feeder controlled by our phone will dispense food whenever we push a button.

2. Productivity

If we're hard-working individuals who often stay after hours in the office, our lives may revolve around productivity. Imagine that we get home and we start cooking dinner. While we're chopping off onions we might notice that:

  • we feel energized by the music that started to play the second we walked into the kitchen.
  • A courier knocks on the door and is handing us all the groceries we need
  • Our laundry is already washed, all we need to do is to fold it.

This can be our day-to-day life if we consider buying a smart home assistant or even different products that can be programmed to do just about everything we want them to. We would still need to push some buttons or say a few words, but it is way more productive to just trigger a command than doing the whole thing ourselves.

3. Easy life

Besides being more productive and saving time, automation is about making our lives easier. Everyone has a job and home chores may not come in as easy tasks or something that we enjoy doing.

Automation will make us the coordinator of a series of devices and tools that work for us at the same time. Paying bills, cleaning the house, planning meals, changing the house temperature, and doing groceries - they can all be automated.

If we look closely, automation is already a major part of our lives.

There are thousands of automated processes that just happen in our lives and we give them no importance: everything our phone does, the music stations, all automation in our car, the automation at our bank, the automation our vendors use, the airlines' contact center - everything today has automation and our home is no different.
