Automation for Jira

Are you aware that Jira (Core and Software) cloud includes powerful automation?
Back in March 2020, it was announced that after acquiring Code Barrel, the developer of the popular Automation for Jira addon in October 2019, Automation for Jira was now available for all Jira Cloud customers.
Personally I hadn’t used Automation for Jira when it was just an addon, but now that I have started using it over the last 6 months, I’ve recognised that it is a real step-change for Jira.
If like me you’ve been using Jira over the years, it has been very weak in terms of workflows and automating tasks as an issue passed through the process, making it a manual and clumsy to use. Some addon's provided limited automation capability but they were difficult to set up and use.
It was hard to recommend it as a tool to automate business processes, which is a lot of what I do.
But Automation for Jira changes everything. What you can do now includes:
- Triggering automation rules via a variety of mechanisms
- A wide range of conditions, actions, branching/related issues, smart values, etc
- Audit log to help develop and troubleshoot automation rules
- Template library so you don’t have to start from scratch
- Powerful calculated fields
- Generate notifications via email, Teams, Slack, etc
- Create and update related issues within and between different projects
And a lot of these automation rules don’t require coding and the interface is drag-and-drop.
