An automation of architecture reviews can create an environment that attracts experienced architects and encourages them to stay.

According to the?2023 Global Talent Shortage?report by ManpowerGroup, the most in-demand?technical skills?sought by employers are top ranked:

  1. IT & Data: With technology playing a central role, expertise in information technology and data management is highly valued (27%).
  2. Engineering: Skilled engineers are sought after for designing, building, and maintaining complex systems (22%).

In response to the 2023 Global Talent Shortage ManPower report says, that 24 % of the in companies implemented countermeasures address talent scarcity by prioritizing automation for selected tasks and processes. This allows them to streamline operations and reduce reliance on manual labor.

Translated to the group of experienced software architects?this means to invest in automated architecture reviews rather than letting them do this manually. An intelligent reduction and automation of architecture reviews can create an environment that attracts experienced architects and encourages them to apply and to stay. When a company explicitly states in job advertisements that?experienced software architects?are required to conduct only a significantly reduced?amount of architecture reviews, it can have several impacts on the number of applications from experienced architects:

  1. Attractiveness and Autonomy: The mention of reduced reviews signals trust in the architect’s expertise. Experienced architects value autonomy and decision-making authority. This autonomy can make the organization more appealing to seasoned professionals.
  2. Quality vs. Quantity Balance: While fewer reviews may attract experienced architects, maintaining quality remains crucial. Striking a balance ensures that critical decisions receive attention. High-quality architecture work often encourages more applications.
  3. Efficiency and Productivity: Reduced reviews mean less administrative overhead. Architects can focus on high-impact work, improving efficiency. Increased productivity positively impacts motivation and encourages applications.
  4. Recognition and Ownership: When architects see their designs successfully implemented, it reinforces their sense of ownership. Reduced reviews allow them to witness the impact of their work. Recognition and ownership drive commitment and interest in joining the organization.

In summary, a thoughtful reduction in architecture reviews can create an environment that attracts experienced architects and encourages them to stay longer in the company rather than to change jobs frequently. Great points made Dr. Te?mar v. Bonin! Developer experience is a massively underrated topic and the engineering leaders need all the help they can get to bridge the gap. I would also point out that it’s not only architecture reviews but just a well integrated static code analysis tool can make a difference with regular code reviews turning into a positive learning experience.
