Automation Anxiety is Real and Widespread

This concern extends beyond dockworkers, as employees across various industries are increasingly anxious about the potential impact of advancements in automation and artificial intelligence on their jobs.

The International Longshoremen's Association, representing East and Gulf Coast dockworkers, recently ended a three-day strike that threatened to disrupt trade and harm the economy.

The ILA successfully negotiated a 61.5% pay raise over six years; however, they are still advocating for stronger protections against automation. The current contract has been extended until January 15 to facilitate further negotiations.

Outside of organized labor, many people are feeling anxious about automation these days. "Automation anxiety," comes from fears that advances in AI and automation will wipe out jobs. Research shows that many workers are nervous about what the future holds for their careers and whether their skills will still matter.

About 56% of Americans think automation will take away more jobs than it creates, according to an August 2023 Gallup poll. More than 20% said they might become obsolete because of AI.
