Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B)

Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B) is an advanced surveillance technology that combines an aircraft’s positioning source, aircraft avionics, and a ground infrastructure to create an accurate surveillance interface between aircraft and ATC. ADS–B is a performance–based surveillance technology that is more precise than radar and consists of two different services: ADS–B Out and ADS–B In.

  • ADS-B Out: This component of ADS-B involves the aircraft's avionics system periodically broadcasting its own accurate position, altitude, speed, and other information derived from its GPS or other navigation systems. This information is sent out at regular intervals and can be received by ground stations or other aircraft equipped with ADS-B In capabilities.
  • ADS-B In: This component of ADS-B allows aircraft to receive information from other aircraft and ground stations. This information can include the positions, altitudes, and velocities of nearby aircraft, as well as information about weather, temporary flight restrictions, and other relevant data.
