Autodidact Culture - The self learner's revolution

The rise of the autodidact culture describes an increasing prevalence of voracious self learners who are empowered by the access of mass information in a predominantly digital age.

The 21st century has brought about many innovations, some of which notably correlate with the adoption of newer forms of media via the internet. This in turn has led to new types of audiences who consume massive amounts of content online - either to do with entertainment or education.

In relation to education, the self-learner, who long had access to sound sources of knowledge since the creation and popularization of common books, now indulges in a fresh and unfettered outlet to even more information.

Hungry for knowledge, these audiences often turn to content creators, thought leaders, and experts online who have the authority to influence countless lives by educating their market.

These knowledge-driven parasocial relationships are quite uniquely tied to the developments of recent times.

For one, the decentralization of information accelerated by the prominence of technology is what allows for the bypassing of traditional education mediums. The growing usage of the internet in all it's multimedia glory plays a crucial part in this cultural trend and learning transition.

Eventually, many independent self-learners who utilize internet platforms, have enough knowledge accessible to them, which they can gradually use to master skills through real world application.

Countless case studies show various internet autodidacts acquiring the skills necessary to accomplish impressive feats of productivity, regardless of age, race, or location.

Never have we seen the creation of so many masters without direct engagement with personal teachers or established institutions. Internet culture and the ability to learn in such a borderless and non-gated fashion plays an undeniable role in the observable trend.

In this regard, the influence of thought leaders and authorities in their respective spaces can help determine the effectiveness of these autodidact ecosystems.

Experts - being brought into a new light - can build and grow influence like never before by sharing what they know online, and they provide this sort of value predominantly through content.

As a matter of fact, we are seeing a cyclical phenomenon of self learners teaching other self learners through online platforms. When self learners acquire enough knowledge to stress test their skillset against a relevant benchmark and succeed, they become masters of their field.

In turn, these masters create content and build parasocial relationships online to attract an audience and gain influence.

Of course, this isn't a perfect system, and it comes with its own perks and problems. Furthermore, not every autodidact attains mastery due to various factors.

Either way, the amount of autodidacts that can masterfully apply what they learn online is a noteworthy milestone nonetheless.
