Autodesk customer story: Framestore
I'm a BIG sci-fi fan, and Blade Runner was one of those iconic moments of my youth (showing my age now) that set a precedent of what I wanted to see in MY sci-fi viewing later in life. Visually, it blew me away, and watching it again now, I appreciate the Vangelis soundtrack even more.
At Autodesk University 2017, last November, there was a session hall open to the attendees to view Blade Runner 2049. Unfortunately, I could not attend and I have yet to see the movie! (I know, where the blazes have I been, right?).
Well. It is right at the top of my list, now that I have an hi def TV to watch it on. Sure, I have the original Blade Runner in my DVD collection, but I wanted to see (and hear) Blade Runner 2049 in its full glory.
The above article from the Autodesk website gives incredible insight in to how Framestore created the Blade Runner 2049 world, and being the geek that I am, I just love knowing that they superimposed that world on to a true set of geological point data of the real Las Vegas. That is just too cool. I love point data and what it can give us. Point data is now providing us with the incredible enhancements to AR and VR that we are seeing today. The article also provides you with the knowledge that the bees in one scene are animated. How do you animate a swarm of bees? I haven't got a clue, but I am extremely happy that the guys at Framestore have!
Thanks Autodesk, for giving Framestore the tech and wizardry that makes movies like Blade Runner 2049 possible. The kind of movie that is so different to our world that it gives us that 'escape' we sometimes need. A visual and auditory experience that we remember for years to come, that sets that precedent for the next chapter. In this case, moving forward from the incredible Blade Runner, to the sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
I'm off to watch the film now. Popcorn is a'popping!

7 年Hi Sean, the image of the pilot fish drone flying over Vegas caught my eye! This is my new, all-time favourite movie. It used to be the original - which I still love but now 2049 has replaced that. I thoroughly recommend the two Blade Runner 2049 VR experiences you can download from the Android store (free). The first one is based in the cockpit of a spinner as it flies near/around LAPD headquarters – just make sure you’re sitting down!
