Autocrat, Plutocrat, Demagogue: What's Your Take?
Burlington was graced by a visit from the inimitable Mr. T-Rump this week. As we are a state known for democracy and civil discourse, the leadership of our art-deco venue which has been graced by the likes of B.B.King, Judy Collins, and Tony Bennett had to, in good Vermont-conscience, agree to rent the venue to the candidate. We should have expected given the candidate's history of willful and mean-spirited exclusion that he would not have reciprocated the grace of the venue's leadership ... ticket holders were screened for their commitment to the candidate before being given the privilege of entering. The event effectively became a private party. Hence, this post's leading question.
Personally, I think he is a little bit of all three rolled up into one cartoon character. That any one is paying attention to bluster as a form of governance speaks volumes to our country's lack of literacy and willingness to let those who possess more wealth have more rights, or at least be more able to access those rights and to be able to hide behind the mask of the corporation, when it suits the individual. Unfortunately, he is but one in a cast of characters in a system where the good intentions have become muddied by wealth; a veil of democracy is laid over a selfish heart and is for sale to the public by drawing attention to false villains rather than the privileged who dine at the same five-star supper.
