Auto-Pilot

Auto-Pilot

I believe too many of us are asleep at the switches. We are walking zombies of mediocrity. We are tethered?to our technology, ruled by the demands of others, afraid to make a move and prisoners to our thoughts. Because of this, we end up feeling trapped.

In my conversations with hundreds of humans each year, both in this community and after one of my keynote speeches, I've found that there are generally three themes that keep most of us trapped.

  1. Wasting Time. (i.e., not facing our mortality and waiting for "someday")
  2. Being a Victim. (i.e., blaming your past for your inability to win in the present)
  3. Fear (i.e., false evidence appearing real and the OG of #fakenews)

What if I told you the cage you feel trapped in is unlocked?

What if I told you that you have?the key to unlock it?

Before I say more, let's first take a quick look at our girl Dorothy from?Wizard of Oz.

Dorothy's life was disrupted entirely when a tornado ripped through her town in Kansas and transported her to the land of Oz, and all she wanted to do was figure out how to get back home. But, unfortunately, she had to take the uncertain journey down the yellow brick road to do that.

Now, on that journey, she encountered all kinds of obstacles, from flying monkeys to angry apple trees, representing the inevitability of disruption, chaos, and change in our lives. And thank goodness Dorothy didn't have to go it alone; she had an ensemble (The Lion, The Scarecrow, and The Tin Man) to walk the path with her + provide support when it got hard.

Finally, after Dorothy had gone through her whole dramatic journey to OZ, the good witch ended up telling her that all she had to do was click her heels together three times and say, "I wanna go home, I wanna go home, I wanna go home" and boom, she'd be home. Back in Kansas.

There had been no need for the long trip down the yellow brick road after all.

Dorothy, who I'm sure was a bit annoyed, says to the good witch, "Well, why didn't you tell me that!"

To which the good witch replied, "You wouldn't have believed me."

See, all this time, you've thought you need something outside yourself to find more LIFE in your LIFE, but the truth is you've always had it inside of you.

Others can help us on the journey, but only you hold the key.

Only you can get yourself off autopilot.

As you venture down your own yellow brick road this year, as you build an ensemble to help you along the way, and as you start to come off autopilot, I'd like to remind you that the future belongs to the brave, so keep moving, courage is a muscle is worth flexing.?

ASSIGNMENT

If we know the three biggest reasons we end up on autopilot, we also have the antidote by reverse engineering them. Here are some simple steps to make a significant change in 2023.

1. How to stop wasting time??Wake up one hour earlier.?It will change your life. Just imagine what you could do with an extra 7 hours a week! An additional 30 fresh hours a month. An entire extra workweek per year. That time to dream, plan, refine, and take action on your most important projects. That’s plenty of time to reflect on your values and rethink your thinking.

2. How to stop being the victim??Start to imagine yourself as the hero of your own story.?What would change if you began looking at everything that It is happening?to?you as happening?for?you? How would life get more manageable for you if the “unknown” became your most excellent adventure and seen as your growth coming to get you? Your new mantra:?I am the victor, not the victim!

3.?How to become the boss of your fear??Fear set, just like you goal set.?For each fear you currently have that is holding you back, flip it on its head by doing this fear-setting exercise:

  • List a fear you have (i.e., speaking on stage)
  • Write down all the things that could go wrong. (i.e., I blank out, etc.)
  • Now, write a list of who or what could help if those things went wrong. (i.e., keep note cards on stage with me, etc.)
  • Last, write a list of what could go right! (i.e., get a promotion because leadership noticed me, etc.)

Remember, winning is impossible when you are sitting?on a pile of excuses.

Small shifts can make big waves.
