Auto doyen Keshub Mahindra: End of an era

In the demise of Keshub Mahindra, Chairman Emeritus, of Mahindra Group , and a pioneer of the auto industry, India has lost a committed philanthropist, towering statesman, and the architect of good corporate governance in the country. Born in Shimla in the year 1923, he was an alumnus of the 美国宾夕法尼亚大学 - 沃顿商学院 of the University of Pennsylvania, US. His tryst with Mahindra & Mahindra began in the year of India’s independence and he was elevated to the role of chairman 16 years later in 1963 which he donned for close to five decades.

In a glorious and eventful stint, he transformed the company from a steel trading company to a conglomerate of diversified business interests including IT, real estate, financial services, and hospitality. He was also the driving force behind key global collaborations with giants including Willys , 三菱商事 , #InternationalHarvester, #UnitedTechnologies, and #BritishTelecom. An Honorary Fellow of the All India Management Association, New Delhi, and a member of the Council of the United World Colleges (International) in the United Kingdom, he was also the recipient of the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion donner by the French government.

• He served on many government committees including the Sachar Commission on Company Law & MRTP and the Central Advisory Council of Industries
• From 2004 to 2010, he was a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry besides being a member of the apex advisory council of Assocham and the President Emeritus of the Employers’ Federation of India
• An avid golfer, tennis champion, skiing enthusiast, and a Continental food expert, his circle of friends included luminaries like JRD Tata, Deepak Parekh, Nusli Wadia, and Dr. Ashok Ganguly
