Autistic ADHD Burnout: Real Talk

Alright, let's get one thing straight: if you're Autistic or ADHD, you're running a marathon every day. Not by choice, but by sheer necessity. You're navigating a world that wasn't designed with your neurodivergent mind in mind. Think of it like running a race on a track littered with obstacles that only you can see or feel. The neuromajority have an unfair advantage in a world (race track) designed for them to thrive and for us to barely survive, literally.
That constant push, that endless race? It's called masking. It's the strenuous act of trying to appear "normal," whatever that is, in a society that favours neuronormativity. It's a performance, a dance, a battle, all rolled into one. But what happens when the curtains close and the audience leaves? What happens when the energy drains out, and the toll of the performance catches up with us? We experience burnout, often repeatedly.
Burnout isn't merely about overworking; it's about over-adapting.
The exhaustive effort to fit into a world (that values the minds and bodies of the neuromajority) is often not a choice, it's survival. Our society, systems, and daily structures aren't built to accommodate our unique way of processing the world. And guess what? That's exhausting!
Sensory overload, executive functioning demands, expectations to 'fit in' – these aren't just inconveniences, they're underpinned by systematic barriers that force us towards the dreaded Autistic ADHD burnout cycle.
Now, here's the reality check. This burnout? It's not a phase, not a one-time obstacle to leap over and move on. It's a chronic experience, an unwelcome partner in this rollercoaster ride of neurodivergent life.
But here's where the plot twist comes in: we aren't here to beat burnout. We're here to outsmart it. We're here to learn to navigate it, to ride its waves, and to keep running the race - but this time, on our own terms. Our rules.
Anyone who tells you it's "curable" or that you just need more resilience (yuk!) has missed the point.
No matter how much we do as neurodivergent individuals, we will still be faced with the same systemic barriers to acceptance, inclusion and accessibility.
However, there are plenty of things we can do both on a personal level and societal level to reduce the burden of burnout on neurodivergent individuals.
