Authority and Responsibility: Key Factors in Successful Company Change

It doesn't matter whether it's transitioning leadership, succession planning or bringing about an overall culture change, bringing about change within your company is not a simple task.

For your company to Thrive as it goes through change requires that you approach it consciously with clear intentions and consider the many nuances of change that many forget about.?

Major changes typically require a re-organization of who is doing what and your leadership team will often trade responsibilities in one form or another.

And…

It's easy to remake an organization chart and change who is responsible for what on a piece of paper or equivalent.?However,?what often gets left out is, that for whatever reason, the authority to fulfill the responsibility doesn't get assigned as well.

As leadership teams are growing or transitioning, the element of "needing to control" often prevents the delegation of the appropriate level of authority.?This failure to delegate authority along with the responsibility is a form of business sabotage that happens all the time.

The leader, or anyone for that matter, who has responsibility for specific results that also doesn't have the authority they need to be successful, will quickly become disheartened. A stellar leader will find work elsewhere and your business will suffer in the long run.??

It is very difficult to keep good or great leaders when they lack the authority to fulfill their responsibilities.?This is why one of the key points on our Successful Leadership Transition Checklist is,

So let me ask you this most important question:

Whether your team is made up of contractors, employees or a combination, do those you have in leadership positions in your company have full authority to perform their role?
