Affiong Ene-Obong is a lawyer with a strong focus on Intellectual Property Law, Disability Rights, and Women's and Children’s Rights. She is also the author of 4 books, the CEO of Five Fifty Fashion and the founder/publisher of YELLOW PEOPLE magazine, a publication aimed at spotlighting and supporting individuals with special needs both nationally and internationally.
Here’s what she had to say about her author's journey.
As an author of 4 books, what unexpected difficulties did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
Choosing a publishing company, an editor, and a graphic designer was challenging, but thorough research and asking the right questions helped me make informed decisions tailored to my writing goals.
For example, my first book, "A Life Called Forever," was published with the help of a writer/editor I found on X (formerly known as Twitter). I saw her helping authors publish their books, reached out, and produced a masterpiece.
Research is key for every author, and it has greatly helped me.
Out of the four books you've written, two are nonfiction, one is a poetry anthology, and the fourth is a fictional children’s book. How did you decide on the genre for each, and how has publishing fiction and nonfiction impacted your career and business?
Deciding on the genre to explore stems from my desire to answer my heart's pressing questions and share the stories and thoughts that inspire me. As a lawyer, disability advocate, and creative writer, I believe I can use my tool of trade—words—to offer solutions and make the world a better place.
I also believe in the power of storytelling, which can renew, rebuild, and reinforce decisions.
Publishing in various genres has given me different perspectives on writing, shaped my mindset, and provided opportunities to navigate my career path better.
What opportunities have you enjoyed because you’re a published author?
