Authenticity: Be You, Be Real

Hitting a milestone of 300 daily articles (with only 13 interruptions!) feels like a significant achievement. Reaching this goal required consistent effort and a commitment to authenticity.

It made me reflect on a question a colleague recently posed: "How can you be so natural?" My answer is simple: I just strive to be myself. Respect and genuine connection are key, not titles, money, or companies.

Let's explore the importance of authenticity in the workplace.

I believe that being real fosters better connections with colleagues, clients, and everyone we interact with. It's about connecting with the person, not their position or company.

Honesty and genuineness shine through, building trust and rapport.

This point is further illustrated by a friend's experience with a manager who presented two very different personas. This manager, despite working at a major IT consulting firm, struggled to build a lasting team. His disingenuous behavior led to high turnover. New hires wouldn't stay beyond six months. He prided himself on this "tough love" approach, leaving most employees feeling undervalued and unseen. The lack of authenticity had a domino effect: unhappy employees, dissatisfied clients, and, ultimately, a struggling company.


What happens when things go wrong? How do you stay true to yourself in the face of setbacks? This is where the journey to authenticity truly begins. The following steps highlight the importance of being real, even when faced with challenges.

Step 1: The FOMO of Fakeness        

  • Missed Connections: Presenting a false persona hinders authentic connections with colleagues and clients.
  • Increased Stress: Constantly putting on an act is draining and can lead to burnout.
  • Limited Growth: Being true to yourself allows for open communication and valuable feedback, which fuels growth.

Step 2: Overcoming the Masks         

  • Self-Awareness: Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and values is the foundation for authenticity.
  • Embrace Vulnerability: Sharing your true self, even your imperfections, fosters trust and connection.
  • Open Communication: Be honest and upfront in your communication, both in successes and challenges.

Step 3: The Rewards of Realness        

  • Stronger Relationships: Authenticity fosters trust and builds genuine connections with colleagues and clients.
  • Enhanced Well-being: Being yourself reduces stress and allows you to feel more comfortable and fulfilled at work.
  • Increased Creativity: An open and honest environment allows for innovative ideas to flourish.

Step 4: Developing Your Authentic Voice        

  • Active Listening: Pay close attention to others, fostering deeper connections and understanding.
  • Empathy: Put yourself in others' shoes to build trust and rapport.
  • Assertiveness: Clearly communicate your needs and opinions in a respectful and confident manner.

Remember, authenticity is a journey, not a destination. By embracing your true self and fostering genuine connections, you can create a more fulfilling and successful work experience for yourself and those around you.

A great topic and indeed Authenticity in both personal and professional relationships are vital for our wellbeing. I learnt this the painful way. I used to be closed and hide behind a facade. I now know better.
